Replacement Key Confusion

During a recent business trip, I seem to have lost the key to my 2014 Premium BRZ. I've still got the second key that came with the car, and I'd like to get a replacement for the one I lost. Can I purchase a blank key (from someplace other than a dealer), get it cut at a locksmith and then program the new key to the car using techstream? Instead of purchasing a blank, can I purchase one pre-cut based on the keycode? I've checked out several online resources, but they are frustratingly vague on exactly what they are providing (many are refurbished and some require 'donor keys', etc). Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Phil

I think it is easier just call locksmith and ask if they do programming of your car key. If so, go from there. from using search function, i helped you found following info

from google https://subaru.locksmithsdrm.com/sr-...t_key_info.pdf

Fishing? Yes, I'm fishing for information...

I generally try to put all background and assumptions into my OP, but I guess I left off "I know I can go to the dealership and get this taken care of, but, as with virtually all auto service and maintenance, I'd prefer to do it myself to save some money". I might add that I had a similar situation with my Jetta a few years ago and bought a new laser cut key from VWVortex and paired it to my car with Vag Comm, all for a fraction of the cost of what the dealer wanted. I'm looking for a similar solution here. With that clarification, my question stands.

Reviving an old post....did you have any luck? Or did you end up going to the dealer? I was alittle frustrated when a locksmith said they could cut and program, only to try and say sorry...

Is a regular key without the beeper significantly less expensive than the radically overpriced ones from the dealer? Does it still need the programming? From that Subaru reference above it looks like it should only cost ~$39 plus the cost of the blank plus a few buck fro the dealer to cover the cost of the cutting machine. As a spare it sure would be handy. I'm so worried that I'm going to lose the only key I have...

Nope: I have not yet resolved this. Lots of 4-button HYQ12BBY 'G' keys on Ebay, but only the $183 option claims to be compatible with the 2014 Base BRZ...

-Phil

Follow-up: I called the local dealer today and he quoted $199 for the key and $55 to program it. I think I'll go for it.

wow..expensive.

you can call lock smith or local key stores to see if they program key for BRZ.
if they do, you can get just key from online if available. cutting key is easy part but immobilization programming is what you want
