NO LSD???????
hi
today i took the car to the garage for an oil change . at that time i had to climb on a small bumper and one rear wheel left on the air AND it was the only spining wheel and at that point i started to suspect my car has no LSD . i lifted the car and was spiningby hands the rear wheels and instead to spin to the same direction (both sides) it was the opposite . at first gear one wheel was forward and one backword-and on Neutral only one wheel was spining. I thought all the BRZ's has LSDS... HELP! Last edited by danielmailrs; 11-16-2018 at 04:58 AM. |

TORSEN lsd
As long as you have both wheels on the ground your good, lift a rear wheel at the track....not so good, it's not the end of the world, it just upsets the car a bit. A Torsen is fairly idiot proof and very reliable though. https://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential6.htm

thanks ew then that torsen isnt that goodie like "Real"Lsd . everytime ive put an lsd into my cars it was the opposite from what ive exped today. interesting if both on them on the ground is exactly like normal LSD or its just feeling like a compromise to the real thing. |

according to his paragraph: However, if one set of wheels loses traction completely, the Torsen differential will be unable to supply any torque to the other set of wheels. The bias ratio determines how much torque can be transferred, and five times zero is zero. its explain why the car didnt push over on that bumper i had to climb. and also the reason why one wheel spin to one direction and the other to the other direction -like an open diff. cheers! also found a nice video that explains well that issue - [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Pw2fKt_0As[/ame] if anyones is interested |

For the street they are great, plus, no real maintenance is required.
For the track they can be a compromise, only on full slicks though I found, you can negate the cons with your set up, but if your at the pointy end you may want something else, maybe... If your not at the pointy end, the TORSEN is fine. I ran the TORSEN in my old MX5 club car for years without any real issues that couldn't be fixed by set up or driving style. I have no intention of swapping the TORSEN in my 86.

Torsen=torque sensing, it multiplies the torque of the spinning wheel with a number depending of gearing inside, say 2-3, and sends it to the other wheel, if it has zero torque on the air the other wheel will take zero too!
On the air try to spin with your hands the one rear wheel, if the other wheel spins the opposite direction it's a good sign for torsen differential |

Yeah, if one wheel completely looses traction, with torsen diff it may act as open diff. It can be countered with nannies applying brakes to wheel with no traction, and while clutch type diffs work better ensuring traction no matter what, torsen is better then nothing/open diff, and compared to clutch LSDs it's simpler to maintain/last longer/operates quieter. These bits matter more to cars that are mostly daily driven.
As to twins w/o torsen LSD in stock trim .. IIRC there was some very-very powerty spec 86 in JDM, that was meant for modders, that will replace stock parts anyway. Unpainted bumpers, steelies as wheels, open diff. Most twins in other DMs in both top and lesser trims have these torsen LSDs, differing only with seat trim/seat heating/dash(w. digital speedo or not)/smart key/foglights/HID lights/dualzone AC. |

If you like grip or drift a clutch type diff is a great mod and a serious upgrade over the stock torsen diff.

If you ever find yourself needing traction because one wheel is up in the air or spinning on ice, pull up the e-brake and then hit the gas until they both spin.

You mean, which button turns it off? Far as I know, only pedal dance. Possibly 3 second press, I'm too lazy to search that one for you. I don't think it's going to give you rock crawler capabilities, regardless...
