Shifter rattle. Normal?
I've had this rattle since the beginning. It wasn't till i broke in the car and start to break 4k RPM did i notice the rattling noise. I ignored since it wasn't that big of an issue, mostly because i read other people having similar issues and its nothing to worry about.
After owning the car for over a year, i decided to get all the small nuances fixed and get it covered under warranty. Dealer started with replacing some kind of washer and believe the issue has been fixed. However when i got the car back, i've noticed the rattle is still there when i did some mid-high rev pulls at 2nd gear and part of 3rd gear. Second time around, we changed a nylon collar. The list specified the following. - 317121 Gear Shift Boot R&R 25025CA000 Collar 35035CA020 Bushing O Ring 35038CA010 Plate Washer 35057CA010 Clamp Snap 35016CA020 Boot Dust Once again, they believe it has been fixed (was told they drove it and no rattling)... of course when i did a similar test as last time 2-3 gear pull, the rattling came back. So finally i decided to do some research and found out Scion had a TSB regarding the rattle and has called for the replacement of the entire Shift Lever Assembly. I noticed the dealer of the TSB and they agreed to try it. once again they told me it was fixed and when i got it, it was not... and it actually got worse! the rattling is louder now and almost unbearable anytime i approach 4k rpm. the only way i live through it is turn the music way up. Here is what they replaced: 317601 Gear Shift Lever, Bushing &/OR Boot R&R At this point I have my list of suspicions, but i'd rather keep them to myself and just have them figure it out. The dealer has scheduled me on the 6th to bring the car in. I will this time sit with their tech and show him exactly what i'm talking about, although the video already does. A subaru engineer is being called in to check out the issue as well. I'll keep you guys updated. too bad that TSB is bullshit.
I have a 2015 past the VIN # it lists.. same problem. also in many other threads about this problem, many people have stated they had the TSB done and the issue came back after a while. it seems like a JDM TRD (not the TRD quick shift kit, but the full assembly) or STI shift assembly is rattle free.. but it's also like 400 bucks. |

I have a 10th Anniversary NB Miata that used to have the Nardi shift knob. These knobs typically develop a rattle. The knob is weighted internally for better feel when shifting and after a few years the weight breaks loose and rattles. Maybe the same thing is going on with the FRS/BRZ shifter knob? Should be easy to check: remove knob and shake it and see if it rattles.

lol...
Seriously though, I have a working theory about the rattle. The shift lever is hollow. There's a little cable for the lockout that runs up through it. I think that might be the source but I just don't care about it.

Nah, mine rattles like crazy. I bought a second one for a little project and that's how I found the cable thingy. I keep meaning to play with the lockout while it's rattling but it's probably for the best because, well, I'm kinda busy driving.

The sound has reduced over time and right now its not noticeable for me. The sound goes away if you just slightly adjust the shifter. The technicians said its nothing to worry about but idk , if the noise comes back again and its really loud I will go there and rant. |
