Because this is more than likely going to be a luxury vehicle, perhaps like the Cosmo back in the day. I really don't think Mazda is prepping this platform for a sports car.

In the instance of the 6-cylinder there are inherent balance benefits to an I6 over a V6 but these can be addressed in the V6 with balance shafts.
There's the longer crank, and there's also the longer block which is less stiff as well. The extra cam drive's mass can be offset with a timing belt (a la Honda J series), and using 2 integrated exhaust manifolds is probably lighter than all the steel piping to the collector needed on an I6. Secondary balance is also better.

I wonder if anyone will make a 120 degree V6...I feel like width isn't that big of a problem, since manufacturers have seem to given up on tall, complicated valvetrains for high volume cooled external EGR.

Because supra development and BMW collaboration started in 2012 and I'd be amazed if this engine is ready for a car by 2022 (Given how long Skyactive took). We'd be getting the supra in 2024.

There's a Mazda/Toyota plant being built in Huntsville.
Plus you know both Yaris' are now Mazdas.
One can only speculate on future collab vehicles

I tried to get a job there. Fun fact, my dad is the project engineer in charge of building the facility.

(Didn't help me get a job any, though. Toyota doesn't like me)
