What does xxx WHP feel like?

We all love to talk numbers and charts but my recent experience of driving an Apr tuned vw Sirocco really opened my mind that numbers aren't everything.

While the car was relatively quick (260whp), it didn't feel so inside the cabin as a driver or passenger. It certainly leaves my car in the dust but for some reason whether it's the manual transmission or the lack of sound deadening or the lowness of the seating position; it's more exhilarating to accelerate in the 86.

I ain't here to talk about other cars but it certainly got me curious on what a twin with actual Power feels like.

This car is all about feel so please share your own experiences for us no FI peasants

Description of feel and maybe what car you can compare it to

This car feels pretty f'ing quick once it gets a moderate amount of mid-range torque. I am running a JDL kit with two different maps at 7 & 10 PSI. I have an idea of what the power level is just from speculation of other owners of the kit, I should be around 270-290whp and 230ish wtq. It is very much a midrange turbo...I find myself shifting at around 6,800 RPM now if I'm going full throttle as there is not much headroom at the top of the rev range with the turbo I have. The way the power is delivered is much much different than OEM. The chassis of this car is completely capable of handling sub 300 whp power without feeling unbalanced.

It is tough to make a comparison because I have only driven a few other FI cars. None of which had the feeling or delivery of power like my car. I have driven a bone stock FD RX-7...and I can say with complete confidence that any twin equipped with one of the basic/standard fare turbo kits on pump gas will go toe to toe with one.

Big topic.

- In general, the FR-S/BRZ has more steering and chassis feedback than your typical street car, which can make the car feel faster.

- In general, cars with smaller engines/lower hp tend to be geared a bit shorter. Up the power and this shorter stock gearing will make the car feel faster. This is especially true with folks who shorten their FD over stock.

- Feeling of acceleration varies widely with FI type, this has been covered many times in various threads - centrifugal SC's build boost as you rev and have a lot of top end, but typically feel less 'quick' than a turbo or positive displacement SC.

I haven't gotten to install my C38 Kraftwerks kit yet, but I can comment on the fact that my FR-S with P&L header and tune feels a lot faster than it actually is. It's one of the best things about these cars

It's more realistic to discuss in terms of torque-to-weight ratio. This is why a litre sport bike will out-accelerate just about anything with four wheels.

High torque is fun/thrilling but we quickly become accustomed to it. In my experience, not until the output of the powerplant becomes a challenge to control in any gear does it feel adequate.

That's where the idea of balance comes in. Put some less grippy wheels on a platform and it get's "fun" again.

I have the Jackson Racing supercharger (c30) kit installed into my brz and at 5 pounds and 91 im around 286hp and at first it was a lot of power. Granted I had the stock wheels and tires so no matter what my traction control was working in 1st and 2nd gear. Now that im used to it and have wider better tires I definitely want more power but the kit still gives me that silly grin when I rip through the gears. Dont get me wrong ive upset alot of v8 owners however the car makes you feel so confident that you want more and more power, just dont blow your rods.

Id say my ESC with a mathematically derived (weight and trap speed) ~ 230whp/200wtq feels alot like a v6 accord or equivalent V6 sedan in power delivery.
