Will you go for built engine/high boost/lots of power? Then i'd probably look for wider tires. Though going for much wider tires may ask for wider wheels too.
For NA build or mild boost 225/45/R17 might be ok. Of grippier tire model then stock primacies though.
I'd drive it for track days at Sonoma Raceway and Laguna Seca along with the windy back roads that dot the East Bay. I'm planning keeping the engine stock and using the GReddy's T518Z turbo kit for stock engines.

And it would be my daily driver.

I don't intend to go FI so haven't gathered info/not familiar with this turbo kit aswell, but possibly with FI & tracking i'd go for a bit wider. Of course square wider tires, not staggered wider in rear only.

How much wider? Like a 235/45R17?

That's a bit subjective thing and of tires chosen. Some track slicks or cheater tires like RE71 may grip well even in lower widths, less track specialised tires like PSS/AD08 maybe wider. Also depends on wheel width you have, as there are optimum tire widths per wheel widths. On stock wheels something too wide will have too much sidewall flex.

Also remember, as sidwall profile is in % of width, unlike for 225/45 which is not that far from stock, 235 and up with same 45% sidewall will be of noticeably larger diameter, so worth dropping down a notch, eg. for 235-245-255 i'd go for /40, for 255-265 - for /35

So would a 245/40R17 tire (Bridgestone Potenza S-04) and a 8 inch or 9 inch wide rim need modification to work with the Toyota 86 clearance and turning? It says the tire can handle rim widths of 8 to 9.5 inches.

Rim offset is 45 mm.

I see no reason for such sized tires or wheels to have clearance issues. x8 should be ok for 215-245 tires, x9 for 235-265. Those that go for very meaty looks or for widest wheels they can fit often have wider/bigger setups then that.

Rim offset is 45 mm.

A 17x9 +45 is not going to work on a stock car. You will need a slightly lower offset, a spacer, or coilovers. You will either be 1mm from the spring perch or touching it.

+35 17x9 will work with springs. And will give enough room to add camber bolts.

A 17x8 +45 will not rub at all, even with a 245/40/17.

I have had these sizes with the same size tires at stock height and lowered 1". (with and without camber bolts too)

Huh, looks like the 17x8 will still hold then when I switch to wider tires for a turbo.

Have staggered PTR56-18130 PTR56-18131 TRD wheels. 7.5 inc rear and 7 inch front width. Got em as a killer deal brand spanking new at dealership for $749.99.

Can I run square 215 40R18 even-though rear is .5 inch more? Any foreseeable problems?

Yes. Square 215/40 will fit no problems on 18x7 & 18x7.5. Though TRD suggests 215/40 front and 225/40 rear. But, I don't see any real advantage to the mini stagger; other than looks. The stretch will look even with the mini stagger.

Cool wheels! Great deal! Please post pics when you get them installed!!!

Hey guys, I actually went ahead and ordered 4x 18x8.5 +38 Work Emotion Kiwami Wheels. Would 225/40/18 tires stretch on a wheel this wide and are there any safety risks with stretching a tire?

I was also thinking about going 235/40/18 all around but wasn’t sure if it would rub on TRD springs at full lock (like doing a U-turn).
