How come my dealer said they are going to replace the tranny entirely? Replacing synchro seems easier? Now I have to worry is it worth it. Replacing tranny could be a lot, could it mess something else up? I mean, right now 4th gear is fine as long as I don't go past 5000, what if the operation makes car underivable with all kinds of small problems?

For warranty work, its much easier to just replace an entire transmission.

Its easier to order complete transmissions, its less shop time to just swap a suspect unit for a new one, and since its all on Subaru's dime the dealership doesn't really care. They just make a decent amount of money and minimize service time.

Regarding your concerns of swapping transmissions - its not a difficult job for a dealership to do. Certainly, you'll have to endure breaking in a new transmission and clutch, but if they're a remotely competent shop, they'd be hard pressed to ruin anything else while they're at it.

i tracked my car last weekend and ran in 3rd and 4th gears all day. Trans worked great, especially with a throttle blip when downshifting. Shifting into 3rd and powering out of the corners was a blast.
Second gear is a little notchy on my car, especially when its cold. So I take it pretty easy until it warms up.

Maybe an oil switch might alleviate some of these problems?

I feel like I don't drive my car the way it should be driven. I've gone into 5th at 5k+ rpms maybe 2-3 times

Nothing wrong with that. It's your car. If the way you drive it brings you enjoyment then that's how you should drive it. I usually drive my cars like I stole them, but I know I'll have to pay the piper in the form of mechanical failures and more intensive preventative maintenance.

Mine does it too. High-RPM shifts into 4th will make a noisy card-flipping sound and also feels a bit crunchy for a second on the shifter. Not really a functional issue though, and I'm at 16k already so I'm debating on just swapping out the fluid to see if it helps...

With the forced induction the dealership still acknowledge the warranty and agree to change the tranny? I almost went FI a couple of weeks ago but then I had the 4th gear issue and chickened out.

Yes they did, but the advisor said that it will probably the last time lol, cause of my mods.

Nah, it went at just 2k miles and the first 1k were break-in. Since the re-build I've done another 2.5k, including some Autobahn (top of 5th into 6th) and it's been absolutely solid. Tech at the dealer reckons it was just an assembly issue.

Personally I think the tolerances are too wide. If you get one component at one end of the tolerance range, and another at the opposite end - they aren't working together. Just like the AF tolerance in some lenses and bodies causing the AF to always be out with the wrong combination.

The fluid is also clearly not great at low temps...
