Moving to TX: vehicle inspection

Hi everyone,

I'm moving to Dallas next month and I've been looking at what I need to do to register my vehicle. On the Texas DMV site, the first thing it says is to get a vehicle inspection. Can anyone elaborate on what they check during this inspection? I have quite a few aftermarket parts installed so I'm a little concerned about failing the inspection...

Any insight would be appreciated!

Just the basics:

Quote:
05.01 Inspect Every Passenger Car For: (Listed in suggested order of inspection)

* Check for evidence of Financial Responsibility

1. Horn
2. Windshield Wipers
3. Mirror
4. Steering
5. Seat Belts
6. Brakes (system) (Parking - beginning with 1960 models)
7. Tires
8. Wheel Assembly
9. Exhaust System
10. Exhaust Emission System (beginning with 1968 models)
11. Beam Indicator (beginning with 1948 models)
12. Tail Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
13. Stop Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
14. License Plate Lamp (1)
15. Rear Red Reflectors (2)
16. Turn Signal Lamps (beginning with 1960 models)
17. Head Lamps (2)
18. Motor, Serial, or Vehicle Identification Number
19. Gas caps on vehicles 2-24 model years old.
As far as emissions are concerned, they will hook the car up to the OBD2 reader machine. As long as no codes are thrown, and all the emissions monitors report ready, you will be good.

Depending on who does your inspection, they will check for tint, nothing darker than 20%. They will look visually for a cat as well. Welcome, let me know if I can get you anything.

It really depends where you take the vehicle. My guy only checks whether your blinkers, headlights and gas cap seal properly. Hooks his computer up to the car and basically ensures that it's not throwing any codes. Usually in-and-out within 10 minutes.

You will need to get a green sheet (VIN verification) from the inspection station to register an out of state vehicle.

Thanks for the input everyone. My main concern was the high flow cat for the front pipe since in CA that would be an automatic fail but it seems like I should be oaky from your responses.

HF cat should be fine. Make sure you get a 'green' sheet though. Costs $1 I believe and it is not actually green. It is needed when you register your car at the DMV.

...just saw this has already been mentioned...

technically the "new" legal percentage in Texas is 35%.. depending on who you go to they wouldn't care about it. Just give them the "I didn't know it change to 35% from 20% and you should be fine. They tried to fail my Infiniti because I had 20% in the front and it was "too dark."

I'm a state inspector. Tint is actually 25%. After market exhaust will fail if the inspector is a ****. And tires can't be below 2 32nds of thread. Come see me I'll explain. If you have out of state insurance your insurance need to meet Texas liability. If its on the frs you should only pay14.50 safety only. I work in Carrolton I'll take care of it.

So if I bought my car in another state and have it registered in Texas but not inspected in Texas am I asking for trouble? I was thinking the inspection would be good till its expired then id just get it inspected in Texas.
