Yeah the wheels suck. Would be the first thing I change. Luckily there’s some great options and people switching to 18x9.5 with 265/35s are shaving like almost 40lbs of rotational, unsprung mass doing so.

That is the exact year and colour of one I had very briefly back in 81.
Well, that is the colour it was supposed to be. It was more faded and rust coloured by the time I had it.

It would kill me to have a brand new car and have to immediately spring for new rims and tires. I truly cannot wait for this giant wheel fad to die.

I had this one (well one like it) in the same Green. I thought I had the wagon but now that I've looked at photos I had the 4-door "sedan".

Two differences ,mine had the chrome "U" bar on the front bumper that "protected the radiator" and it had different wheels and tires. When I bought it had wider tires on the back than the front which looked cool but obviously did nothing on FWD car. It also made it sit higher in the back in '70s muscle car fashion. I kept it that way though because I liked the way it looked. I enjoyed the hell out of that car for almost 120,000 miles during my college days.

Oooh are we shitting on cars because of preconceived notions about what they were like 40 years ago? Can I join?

I have the same gripe with almost every car honestly. The zenki 86/BRZ OEM wheels were atrocious. The wheels on the kouki model are better, but still nothing to be excited over, in my eyes.

You really think they would start making more cars with 16'' wheels in the future?

My 2008 FA5 (bought new) was so good it made multiple things about the 2013 FRS (also bought new, civic traded in) seem deficient. The K20 and the gearbox in that car was sublime, the driveline was truly superior to the toyobaru. I agree that was one of the last, best Hondas. I learned all my racecraft on that car and despite being FF it was still very fun to autox/track/hillclimb while being an exceptional daily. I beat the crap out of that car and it never faltered. I am sure the new Type R is fantastic, I just wish they didn't go so Gundam on it.

Completely agree on the chaser sentiment. That would be my ideal daily:
~3400lb, I6t, 4 doors, standard, rwd and tough as nails. Alas they don't make them like that anymore. I do have the option to import them though...

I actually considered getting an FA5 and going full FD2 with it multiple times. Just never opted to pull the trigger.

Maybe I'm missing something from this fd2 thing...

So you take a Honda Civic, then do a whole bunch of cosmetic modifications to make it look like... a Honda Civic?

Similar to like how people would take an FRS and then swap headlights, badges, and other things to look more like the 86 sold overseas. Or adding a bunch of STI parts to make their (13-16) BRZ look like the BRZ Ts that wasn't sold in the states. Just like when people would buy a 240sx hatchback and then spend a bunch of money putting OEM 180sx Type X aero on it.

I think this...

look substantially better than this...

And the swap is pretty easy. Everything bolts right up except for a small piece behind the tail lights that has to be trimmed. Aside from that, just paint it bolt it together.

Did that gen Type R have a superior suspension to the Si? Or was it still saddled with crappy struts?

Cars these days have big (huge) wheels because safety regulations have driven cars into becoming bigger blobs than they need to be. When you have a bloated larger car, you need larger wheels to make things look proportional. Unless the future cuts back on all those dumb regulations, it won't happen.

Still machperson strut design. But springs, dampers, sway bars, bushings etc were all revised.
