OEM Oil cooler from the 2.0 DIT Forester

So I popped the hood on a Forester XT with the 2.0DIT boxer engine at the dealer today and the first thing I noticed was the factory oil cooler...

Anyone care to test one of these out on a Twin?

This has been discussed several times. The consensus seems to be that it is an oil warmer more than an oil cooler. That is, it helps the oil get to operating temperature in cold climates. The exchanger is so small that it wouldn't cool the oil very effectively, even for a daily driver.

the heat exchanger is the easy part. this could still be a win for someone looking for a cusco-like watercooled setup for less $$$. that is, of course, if it's less $$$.

This makes no sense. Cylinder walls warm oil. Nothing with fins warms !
Does the gizmo run coolant thru it?

it does run coolant through it. This is the same oil cooler you will find on 02-07? WRXs. Cusco actually re-packaged the OEM part as an oil cooler for the BRZ... I wouldn't waste your time on it.

If we could locate an inline liquid to liquid heat exchanger this would seem to be decent solution. But alas, my climate really doesn't call for one.

Or just run a robispec oil water radiator?

I think the jury's still out on this type of setup. We're not "just" talking about saving some money here. We're also talking about decreasing the complexity of the setup. If this type of cooling system were to work, even decently, then it along with a larger capacity radiator could just do the trick. All without having to add a physical oil cooler and the hardware to go with it.

Personally, I'm keeping my eyes on this and see where it can go. A member has already purchased the Cusco package and should have some results, and hard data, for us soon.

IIRC, @tonystewart

While I agree that is by far the most eloquent solution. I still don't know what I'm going to end up using for a power adder, so I don't want to buy into something and then find out I don't have the room for it.

I wouldn't underestimate a simple, oem cooler like this, if you track your car. Even though engine coolant is hot, its not the 270+ f oil temps people are seeing on track. Now the other advantage is probably no loss in oil pressure and no exposed oil lines.

I was going to run an STi OEM oil cooler before trying anything else as oil pressure is of paramount importance on a boosted FA20.

I have a very serious radiator on our STi race car and an 8 quart dry sump setuo but I rely only on the oem oil cooler FWIW.

Nice find. Maybe this would be a good solution to use with a koyo radiator. I like the robispec setup but I don't like how it adds a ton of weight (wet weight) way up front and I can't just remove my bumper beam to compensate.

Ya, these have been on EJ motors for what, 20 years now?

I ran one on my N/A impreza for like 6 years. Its certainly not going to hurt anything. Especially if coolant tempts are around 190 and people really are hitting 270 for oil temps!!! That 80 degree difference certainly means this kind of air/water-cooled oil cooler will have an effect in extreme situations.

The ECU doesn't read oil temps right?
