bought my 86 chirping at less than 100 miles, at nearly 2200 miles, it chirps loud enough to be heard inside with the windows up, with the hood closed or open, and even from over 30 feet away.

goes away almost immediately when applying the gas pedal, regardless of fuel or oil used.

shell v-power, exxon mobil, chevron, etc..... all at 93 octane.
0w-20 or 5w-30

just my findings so far, gonna take it in for service once i have time to let the things just sit.

I think everyone should just accept the chirp as it is. If the engine goes, we still have power train warranty

When does anyone suppose Toyota will come up with a permanent solution to the problem and not just a bandage?

ill be driving over 200 miles this weekend so we'll see how it goes.

I didn't have chirping in Oregon. It only started when I came into California.

I dont feel like reading through all of this, but do those of you that have the chirping noise use 93? I can only get 91 where I live and have not had the chirping noises.... I drove to North Carolina 2 weeks ago and once I got to Illinois and had to stop for gas I could get 93 so I did... Well after a couple fill ups with 93 (filling up at half tank, so it was 93/91 mix) to get a full tank of almost completely 93 fuel from Shell I started hearing the chirping noise... I had the crickets the whole week and a half I was in North Carolina... I got back last Sunday and filled up with 91 and drove around for a bit... NO MORE CRICKETS!

Sort of. While you're right that it's the fuel causing it to chirp (more or less), it's not the octane rating, it's the ethanol content. It's possible the area you live in has a lower ethanol content in 91 octane gas than 93 in other parts of the country. In my personal experience, Shell gas seems to exhibit the chirps more than other gas. Others have reported different. But there hasn't been any correlation between OCTANE rating and the chirping. Just a coincidence.

alright that makes perfect sense. our 91 here has no ethanol so that would explain why it stopped

Well, I just took my car back to the dealer to get them to order another pump. I had it replaced about 4 months ago, and it started again. A friend of mine bought her car in November and it started chirping a couple of weeks ago. I guess if enough people complain maybe Toyota will redesign the pump? My old Mini had direct injection and it didn't make noises like this....
