I've heard this too, but if it's the other parts that need to break in, how would going above 4K rpm affect the other parts? As long as one isn't hammering it, shifting hard, dropping the clutch, etc, it would make sense that it would be unaffected. I think varying the rpm for the specified km makes sense either way though.
