Hard break-in was for the old old days when you need to seat the rings, but today's engines are already break-in at the factory. It's all the OTHER components of the car that need to break-in. The burning rubber smell is normal. I had it when i first got the car, and 2000km later i still have that smell it's just not as strong as before.

During the break-in period just drive it nicely.

I've heard this too, but if it's the other parts that need to break in, how would going above 4K rpm affect the other parts? As long as one isn't hammering it, shifting hard, dropping the clutch, etc, it would make sense that it would be unaffected. I think varying the rpm for the specified km makes sense either way though.
