So your experience with Santa Monica Subaru was good? I ask because I've read some horrible reviews of both Santa Monica & Glendale Subaru's. Sucks since they're the 2 closest dealerships to me. Hope it's all been worked out for you. :happy0180:

Cam Gear / VVT Issue

I too am experiencing this problem. Bought the car about 3-weeks ago (FR-S flavor), then the rough idle, check engine light and the rest of the drill. The car is in for repair with no ETA on repair as the parts are back-ordered. Very disappointing to see this happening for so many people. I just hope the manufacturers and dealers can get this worked towards a happy ending.

Thanks to everyone for their posts! With sufficient numbers, maybe a recall can be issued if it hasn't already.

Well this is stupid. I was hoping never to write in this thread again. I thought I bought my dream car in August, but my BRZ sucks. Not worthy of TeamSweet.

My boss has told me it's character building, but he's starting to get more pissed than I am at the amount of times I'm leaving work to take my car in.

The dealership has made the appropriate repairs, but I told them it still didn't feel right. Spoke with SOA on Tuesday for the millionth time and told them I didn't feel safe in my car. They said my car is running normal and it's safe. We'll see...

Anybody else's CEL/SL come back from the dead recently?

had mine come on at 64 miles, then they claimed to fix it and it went off again at 5K miles.. annoying.

Perhaps you didn't get the latest ECU flash?

Well this thread and all of the other threads regarding this problem are very disappointing. My car is scheduled to arrive at Santa Monica Subaru next week. What to do what to do...

On a positive note though I found something in another thread that might be of some relevance. Take a look at this link and tell me what you guys think.

That's just the UK catching up on what Scion America issued last month.

Does anyone believe not a single test mule popped a CEL prior to the car being produced for mass consumption? I don't. I'm starting to believe part of the cars MSRP includes about $1000 worth of repairs built into it, that you are all getting now "under warranty".

This comes from one of the guys on the GT86OC over here:

Had a call today from the head of engineering at Toyota GB. He took a long time to explain (to someone with no mechanical engineering knowledge) the reason for the VVT issue. There is an oil valve that controls the flow of oil (I think head said the oil in the VVT) this is out of synch with something that goes on in the VVT and the two parts had been developed with tolerances that were proving to be too far appart. He said Toyato had already started to change how the two parts were put together and that they know had 20 cars in the uk that had developed the fault and each one had to be treated individually and all of the cars now rectified had no problems. He also tried to explain how the ECU is allways "learning" so they don't expect a flood of problem cars, only those outside the required tolerances.

My personal opinion, this car has been out since 2012, these "growing pains" so to speak should have been worked out a long time ago, the fact that you guys are still having issues is ridiculous. This needs to be addressed by Subaru or Toyota under warranty even if the warranty is expired. Just my 2 cents

I had this issue last summer on my car, with code P0018. It was a pain in the ass but got it repaired and resolved with very little out-of-pocket expense after a 2-week battle with Subaru Canada.

Oddly enough, my car is very very close in production to the one in the original post from 2012. My car was also born 06/12, and my last 4 are 2685. I read somewhere that the last 4 of your VIN tells you when it came off the production line (correct me if wrong), but if that's correct, than my car is less than 100 cars before OP's car, and eventually had the same issue, although mine popped up a lot later with a lot more mileage (had my car for 3 years before it happened, and had 110k kilometres on it by then).

Interesting to note that the Canadian check engine light does not have the word "check" under it; it just shows the "engine" symbol. Different clusters I suppose?

Cheers!

Correct, last VIN digits are number of car coming off the production line in numerical order.

Check engine light and some others I can't recall of the top of my head are different.

dragging my frs home from noho toyota after they had it for 4 weeks and finally told me (2600$) and and going to tear into the engine myself, they told me because of lack of oil change records and finding metal in the oil pan they wont warranty it, its 51k. been getting p0011 and p0021 pretty consistently. Please tell me I don't need to pull the whole engine out of this GHAY NA.

metal shaving in oil pan , likely engine is stuffed, and had metal shavings pumped through it. The two cam related codes may be due to cam actuators or oil control valves failed or blocked damaged by metal particals.

best option is usually to remove engine and replace with another complete unit. cost/time to completly strip and clean all metal shavings and the case sealant from entire engine usually not worth it.
