Removing Intake Silencer

Has anyone tried this? My friends at a meet disconnected my intake to see what it sounded like. One mentioned removing the silencer from the intake.

I've removed it and plugged up the opening. Unfortunately there was no major sound difference.

Assuming OP is referring to this. And I'm not sure. Got the AIRAID box personally, and love it. Plus the price is great- especially with the $50 rebate!

I'm pretty sure the OP is referring to chamber the projects downward ~90 to where the sound tube comes off. Yes people have removed it. No we don't have anything that's 100% concrete about it's effects. Perrin posted gains of 0 hp when they tested it out. Some have reported no issues, others are reporting issues at high load and low rpm. YMMV

Removing the intake silencers can cause issues with the MAF reading the incoming air. One job of the silencers is to counteract resonance from the engine that causes the air in the intake pathway to vibrate. These vibrations can cause the MAF to mis-read the air passing through it. Best to leave them on just in case.

Yeah leave it on. Google a video of Ferraris new v12. That engine has these weird looking tubes sticking out from the intake for each cylinder bank. They function similarly to the box you have removed in that they aid intake harmonics. The volume of the box on our car is very carefully calculated. It may be there to alter the engine note, but it also likely plays a role in helping the intake cram as much air as possible into the engine. Some engines actually achieve a small supercharging effect from a properly tuned intake.

Well I dont see where removing the silencer (a hollow box) would make much more of a difference than changing to a short ram intake as far as air flow goes. I ended up removing it and it actually sounds good. It gives the engine a more growly note when I really get on it. I'm eventually going to get a sri but this is cool for a while.

the box is not a silencer, i have no idea who told you this or where they got that info from. For what it really is refer to ahausheer post.
