It'll be a hard sell, but at some point decades old Civic's and Miata's won't be viable competition cars any more, unfortunately it'll be a legislative decision unless STS and ES numbers begin to seriously decline soon.

Late to the convo since I've been focused on the Cali events but this is pretty much exactly where the SCCA finds itself right now. A lot of cars in the BS/CS/DS range are just stuck until ES opens up as a viable class for re-balancing. If you want to feel like your car is competitive (consistently, not just at a random event or two) in DS you need a different car than an FR-S/BRZ/86. They're simply too far down on torque, horsepower, and tire size to be a serious threat. They'll perform better on tight courses if you're good at conserving momentum but they lose on the speed course and they lose on any course where there are significant digs.

All that said... for anyone just starting out who isn't ready to go all-in trying to challenge for trophies or national championships at the tour events I would still recommend DS if SSC isn't an option. Driving these cars in street spec is a great teacher for developing/improving some key skills and it translates to all platforms. If you spend 3 years running DS in a twin instead of an STI/Type-R/Fo-RS I'm confident you will develop your driving skills quicker. Every tiny mistake in these cars adds up to big losses in overall time.

This is exactly my plan. I am quite happy with how my car handles, I just need to develop MY skills more.

I don't think you've driven on a set of Federal 595rsrr 's. They sound like industrial fans. Or a jet engine. I know summer tires are "loud" but you almost can't have a conversation with the Federals on.

Ive raced on them with my Number 400 Yaris in 2017-2018
and i used them on my S2000 for BSP in scca, and finally used them as practice tires on the communal San diego region CS ND1 miata

and will be running them again on practice wheels with the FRS

if you are concerned with noise then might I suggest Ironman G2 All seasons. of which I have for sale with only 2 autox events on them

I was more making the comments for others. Yes, they are great for racing, but just a fair warning, they are loud on the street.

I currently have a set on my race wheels but they are getting burned off tomorrow during the practice day and replaced with Hoosier's

Anybody ever run their twin with the stock front sway bar and no alignment? and if so what did u experience? and when u added an aftermarket front sway what did u notice on the course? The reason for asking was i ran my BRZ at an autocross and felt like at any time the wheel was even slightly turned i was unable to hit the go pedal any more than about 25% due to oversteer and even trying to accelerate out of the end of a slalom the rear end was fishy as hell, and on a small crest with a turn i couldn't even think about stepping on the gas.... right now i just have old dunlop z2 tires which are better than the stockers at least. i wonder if alignment would help with the above issues also. i felt like i should have been able to give it more gas than i was able, i sure was with sport mode on. With all off it was really difficult. Sometimes i wonder if it is related to my old FWD bad habits...lol

Depending on how bad your alignment is, that alone could be some of the issue. My guess though is it's old, not-so-grippy rubber or simply lack of surface grip.

My own well aligned car was the poster child for throttle oversteer at the first event of the season in light rain but was sticking like glue on a different course in steady drizzle next event.

Z2's are pretty old but I never found the car loose totally stock, I was on Z2SS for about two years and totally wore them out. I'd expect coarse driver inputs are causing the car to feel oversteery, if the alignment is bad that could be the problem but you don't know until you measure it, video to review is good, some guys on Reddit r/autocross will put time into giving you feedback on anything.

I am really rusty, first time out in 3 years except maybe one or two codrives, honestly on my flat driveway my car looks like it has Positive camber, so that could be an issue also. having some serious issue getting stock crash bolts.... ordered 2 times and got the wrong bolts both times, ugh!

I autocrossed my 86 in DS for the first time Sunday. It was a lot more fun than my WRX. Two things it definitely needs right away.
1. Front Sway bar. I was looking at the 22mm Perrin front bar. Are there better options in the $200 range? Is the Hotchkis bar to much with the stock rear bar?
2. Wheels and Tires. There are not many 17x7.5 options that clean the brembos. I have been looking at some Konigs. Are there any other light options?

1. I always liked the Perrin 19mm. I have run the TRD front bar for the past couple seasons which has worked well. I would avoid the Hotchkis bar because I thought it was too stiff. If you can extend your budget by a bit, I think the Karcepts bar is the one to buy.
2. Enkei RPF1? I always thought it was tough to find a lightweight and strong 17x7.5 option even without needing to clear Brembos. You should be able to run 235 or 245 on 7.5 rims though!

My car is a TRD SE but, it doesn't have the TRD springs, sways, or wheels. I think it is in DS.

If it has the same wheels as the standard edition, those wheels are 7.0".
If your car edition has 7.5" wheels, it should be in CS.


Edit: Also, if you have the bigger Brembo, you probably have the performance package, which include wider wheel (7.5"), better shocks (sacks shocks, but stock spring), and should be classed in CS I think (unless this changed recently).
