Just curious if anyone would be interested in an lq9 coil retrofit kit for our cars? It would mount them elsewhere to get them away from the heat by using a short plug wire. These coils are so strong using a wire would result in a negligible spark loss.

Well I may as well add to this thread, OFT stage 1 93 Grimmspeed tune and ive been getting P0351 pretty consistently in the summer heat in 3rd 4th & 5th gear hard driving.
Has anyone had any luck with going to a heat range colder plug or is truly just a ambient heat issue thays killing the coils? |

My thoughts are because #1 fails more often than the others combined it's the heat. Especially if the factory header and heat shield are removed. I've only had one fail (#1) and I wrapped the replacement with heat tape and have had no issues since including several summer track days.

CEL P0351 Ignition Coil "A" Primary Control Circuit/Open
I just had my first fail and I have the open flash header. No wrap. it's definitely from that plus my many spirited drives into the mountains.
Does anyone think an oil cooler will help prevent or slowdown these failures do to excessive heat? Or maybe even E85 if you have a tune for it. I know E85 runs cooler. Just not sure if it's enough to make any difference. Anyone have any other cooling ideas? I might get my header wrapped but I hear that accelerates the life of the header. |

Only time I've got coil open error was in my Mustang after my dumbass sprayed the engine with a hose. There wasn't full contact but there wasn't no contact, so I got some dieletric grease and that fixed it.

I got 0351 today 3rd gear. All stock, just axle-back, street driven, I only have 34k kms, so just under 22k miles - not impressed.
Code cleared after 3rd restart, as I was about to clear it with the scanner... |

Wrapping the coils definitely helps.
As I track my car, I had repeated problems with those ignition coils and had to change them every 6 months. However, I have wrapped those coils approx. a year ago; CEL did not come back. It seems it solves the problems, or at least decrease the frequency of failure.

Am I lucky? Cars done 13k miles and about 10 trackdays.
The first 5 trackdays were with a stock car, and a couple of those were hot days where oil hit around 140C. No coil pack issue yet... |

I would say lucky or not as hot as you though it would be. If you have an unwrapped and uncoated header it makes it come on faster. I did around 10 track days with the car stock as well and never had one. Changed the whole exhaust system and did around 6 track days, and my first coilpack (A) poped. I changed it but didnt wrap them (my mistake) and it came back (same coilpack) after 4 more track days. Both times it poped was during very hot and humid days. I have since then wrapped them as best as I could without taking them out. If it pops again I`ll wrap it better with it out before putting it in (oh that phrase needs a context :P ).

Just clarifying, it sounds like the best replacement for these is still OEM and then wrapping them? It doesnt sound like there has been a reliable replacement yet. Just got my first CEL for this after 2 seasons of autocross. Cars being built for STX but currently running header, ecutek, and running on 93 so nothing to crazy. The code was thrown when I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd at WOT.

CEL P0351 Ignition Coil "A" Primary Control Circuit/Open
Has anyone on here replaced the coils themselves? The coil itself is only like $80 but the dealer estimated like $300-$400 for labor. They said they would need to lift the engine out to replace the coil since its a boxer and the area they needed to access is on the side.
Seems a bit extreme, can anyone verify this? I'd rather just do it myself, but not if I need to lift the engine. |
