If your cruising down the highway at 70 MPH on a 90F day and open the widows, you get 90F air hitting you in the face at 70 MPH.

Using the AC compared to the vent - yes, vent will preserve MPG.

Using the AC compared to rolling down the window - negligible due to aerodynamics. Better to just use AC.

So in summary, you're correct that using AC affects MPG by a small amount (since the engine has to turn the pulley that turns the belt), but when compared to the other solution of rolling down the windows, there's not much of a difference. Our vents suck due to the layout of the parts in the engine, so it's not often we get to enjoy the vents for cooling purposes

I don't even use the heater. Just the heated seats.

Welp, schmearcampain, as mentioned, that's just the nature of the beast.

You can:

* punch the recirc button to close the vent
* turn on the A/C for a minute or so to cool down the vents
* turn on the A/C and leave it on
* open a window

Your call .....

went for a spirited drive in the mountains yesterday and rolling down the windows it flooded the cabin with hot air, which was nice because it was cold outside but I wanted an open air feel. Just sayin

Kind of leads me to something I've noticed that I really like about this car. In most other cars, I drive w/ windows up most of the time just so I don't get wind in my face/blowing around hair. In the 86, windows down doesn't really seem to bring much air into my space. It's nice to drive window(s) down!

Slightly off topic, but this car has the coldest A/C of any car I have ever owned.

Did your previous cars have ac? My ac won't even keep cool if car is not moving. Under any engine load compressor also turns off and instantly depletes cold air supply. Only really gets cold on hwy with partial throttle. Took to dealer and they said it's fine. Damn south Florida humid heat year round

So let me get this straight. It's 90F and you're complaining the uncooled air from the vent setting is too hot? Do you understand what the vent setting does? It's just outside air. Which as you said, is 90F. I'd think the problem would be obvious.

And if a difference of 1.75 MPG is going to break you, why the hell aren't you driving a hybrid or an electric car?

It was 86F/70% RH here yesterday. Windows down feeling fine. Only turned on the AC as I was pulling in to get things prepped for my girlfriend who hasn't adjusted to humidity yet(we moved from the CA high desert where 15% is considered humid).

I hate turning on the AC if I don't have to, but even today at 73 degrees outside, it feels like 90 inside the car.

lol, this car REALLY needs remote start! I can understand why it doesn't but in 2014 on a car that on some peoples budgets isn't cheap, this is almost unforgivable with the Scion line of cars in Toyotas brand. I'n my tC I have to roll the windows down leaving work because I don't want to drive for 5 minutes with them up dying in my car hot waiting for the AC to fully kick in!

Maybe its a Firestorm thing then, because mine will freeze you out after just a few minutes on anything higher than 2 on even the warmest day. That black interior sure does get hot fast when the Sun is beating in though.
