Not sure about dentists but real doctors often make terrible pilots. They got the money to buy a nice plane... but often don't put in the time and effort into being a good pilot that they do to feet or the vag or whatever they specialize in. It's more a means to an end for them. (Although some doctors are also good pilots but usually the more passionate [about flying] ones).

OK, an airplane story it will be.
It was an overcast day when we took off from Tacoma Narrows airport in a Cessna 172' piloted by an old retired air force LTC pilot type. I was flying right seat. Yep, if that old coot would happen to croak, I (not those two troops of mine in the back) was going to attempt to land it. So, we set a course for Eastern Washington to do some aerial imaging of some potato fields. Now, to get there, we had to fly through (over) the Yakima Firing Range, which was also a flight training area for F-16 fighters. So, the pilot told me that we had exactly a one hour window to cross the range (of about 250,000 acres). Also it was most important to maintain an altitude of at least 10,000 feet but no higher than 15,000 feet. Of course I asked why? He said that if we dropped below 10,000 feet there was a chance that an artillery shell could shoot us down. If we ventured above 15,000 feet, we would be in the air space of the F-16s and they could knock us out of the sky. He said "keep your eyes pealed". I said for WHAT - exploding artillery shells or fucking jet fighters coming at us at 10,000 MPH! - Well, we made it across and did our imaging thing. The pilot said for the return trip we are going back a different way because we didn't have a window for that day. I said, with a sigh of relief, "GOOD". How are we going back? He said we were going to follow the Columbia River Gorge to Western Washington. That gorge is one of the windiest places on the planet and the rock walls of the gorge are very steep and hard. However, I figured we would be better off crashing in a large river that getting shot down or blown out of the sky. Well, we made it safely back to Tacoma. THE END humfrz |
