Congratulations and amazing job Toyota!! This just goes to show what can be achieved by year after year of everybody working hard as a team, creativity, innovation, and never giving up.
...and also having all your competitors quit |

Le Mans is the ultimate endurance race after all. In the end, they endured and won. While it would have been nice to still have Porsche and/or Audi as competition...I think it's still a legitimate win. It helps in my mind that they have shown good speed in the past (ie 2016).
I'm a biased fanboy though... |

Congratulations to them, but this win will always have an asterisk attached to it.
Easier to win when you have no competition.

I think people are blowing the 'hollow' victory out of proportion. Audi barely had competition for a decade in LMP1. Toyota at least ran a flawless race which cannot be said for any other year. They beat themselves two years ago with the engine failure with ten minutes to go so even without Audi or Porsche they would have lost. If I recall their lap times were pretty damn consistent.

I always find comments about this year's race as "not a real win" interesting, considering the fiasco wasn't with LMP1, but rather with a bunch of secondary rules regarding drive-time, max laps per stint, etc.
Yes, Toyota was the only LMP1-h in the field, but as 2016 proved, to win you have to finish the race. There is no guarantee of finishing in a 24 hour endurance race. -alex |

A FB group I'm on shared this info based on the fastest 100 laps of LM overall winners in the last few years. The data is a bit conclusive:
Even plotting the data of top 25 laps and averaging the times, you still have cars in LMP1 that were faster than Porsche last year. |

That makes me want to go buy some KIMOA. I'm not even an Alonso fanboy but he has what like a few races in a prototype?

so you're comparing new Toyota cars to old Porsche/Audis? Surely if Porsche or Audi competed this year they could have improved also? |

It's not Toyota's fault that VW Group decided to cheat on emissions and pulled back from more expensive motorsport activities, yet everyone somehow blames Toyota for wanting to participate in the current WEC with the current set of rules that will end at the end of 2019. |

It's only a hollow victory if we ignore everything that can go wrong (i.e. having cars from other classes or privateers wander into your path, or swipe you, etc.)
