Hello DarkPira7e,

That's a shame your pet cat is sick -

Over the years, we have had several pet cats. My wife and kids and grandchildren get quite attached to them.

When one of our cats gets injured or sick, I'll care for it, to an extent. The extent usually ends when it has to go to the vet.

Back in the day, when the animal wasn't recovering and went off feed and was in pain, I would take it down to the woods, along with a hammer and then give it a proper burial. I would tell the family that the cat died and I buried it.

Today, I would take the cat to the vet to get a second opinion and if the vet said it was terminal (read - cost too much to make well), I'd pay the vet to send it off to kitty heaven.

@DarkPira7e I'm very sorry for your situation. I'm not a cat person, but I have ALWAYS had a dog, and I don't just love them like family, they are family.

That said, I have to agree with @humfrz on this one. Maybe it's a generational thing, or a having grown up rural thing, I don't know, but if I were in your shoes I would have the Vet tell me what the alternatives are, and if the cat is in pain, I would have her relieved of her misery.

Over the years, I've done this with 3 dogs. Technically, they may have been "saved" and lived a couple of years longer, but it would have been a financial burden to my family. One of them I've lost since I've been on here, and the story is buried somewhere in the archives. It's a heart wrenching decision, and I've literally cried over every one, but in the end it was the right decision.

The good news is if you go down that path you will be able to rescue another cat that may otherwise not get rescued, that's a good thing.

If you do decide to help your cat, I hope it works out well for you and isn't a burden.

Tonight we're going to be determining if his sickness is too far gone and possibly put him down. We don't want to be selfish and prolong his suffering.

That sounds like a sound plan.

If I really needed $5k that I couldn't borrow from someone and pay back in short order the FR-S is like first thing on the chopping block. I'm positive I can find a semi-fun shitbox for <$5k, get >$10k for FR-S + parts and figure out how to get back into something fun when everything is sorted again.

It's a fucked up situation, our vet didn't give us a choice last summer and she was put down, probably the same outcome if the alternative was a $3k bill so she could limp along for another year or two, no, been there done that, poor quality of life isn't worth throwing thousands of dollars at the animal imho, best of luck.

I agree on all accounts. If his quality of life cannot be improved and he has to live on medication I feel that it's better to let them go. I'll find out soon if they even think operating is worthwhile.

I am not suggesting in the slightest there isn't an attachment to one's pet.

But I do not understand, cannot comprehend why one would ask for donations to care for a pet. If I am going to donate money it is going to be to a cause that I believe to be worthwhile.

Yeah, I'm not being helpful and I would have been sympathetic had you posted about the loss of your cat but I find this GoFundMe request a little offensive.

Hopefully he doesn't log back in this weekend and spends the weekend with his wife and deals with our insensitivity on Monday.

I don't think that the observation is insensitive. I am both sympathetic and truly fascinated by this phenomenon.

Sorry for kitty.

I think my intention was read incorrectly. Rather than proceed and cause further confusion, I'll move on.
I think I became too involved in this forum, considering I am actually a bit put-off by the lack of understanding. Maybe I used the GoFundMe tool wrong? I'll take Strat's advice and go away.

For what it's worth, he passed.

We all grasp at whatever straws we can to prolong the life of creatures we love. We've had thirteen cats, and I confess I only ever really made a strong connection to three of them. We've also had six dogs in our almost forty years as a family, and the loss of each of our three German Shepherds in particular was almost unbearable.

I make no judgments, but am here only to say that I am really sorry to hear about the loss of your loved cat. The losses of our Shepherds, one at a time over three decades, each and every one, were some of the most difficult times in our lives, and we had some pretty awful times here and there. Once you invest your love in an innocent creature, it's absolutely heartbreaking to have to let them go or see them suffer. Personally, I'm a dog person and don't really get the whole cat thing (although one of my sons and his wife is an OVER THE TOP cat person to the point that I'm kind of worried about them), but that doesn't diminish the pain that you're going through. I truly feel for you.

We made the decision to let our last two Shepherds go rather than spend thousands of dollars to extend their lives another few months with severely diminished quality of life... but even those two decisions still haunt me.

God Bless.
