what is this? paint chip?

I never park anywhere remotely close to other cars or shopping carts. I did hear a rock / ding a week ago while driving .. maybe road debris or rock from interstate?

paint is thin MUCH!??

now what?? how can I fix this so it doesn't rust?

It depends on what you mean by "fix". Repaint and blend or touch it up (sparingly) and forget about it.

Looks like what ever hit you did so with such velocity that heavier paint wouldn't have made any difference.
Grab a touch up pen from the dealer and you can make it almost disappear. As far as rust goes, I have one that looks just about like that and so far with 3 months worth of winter and all the salt that goes with it there is not even a hint of rust even on the bare metal. I left it bare as an experiment to see how "rust resistant" the panels really are in comparison to the claims Toyota made. So fart hey were right!

I think that's metal that is exposed. I'd say if you have the money get a touch up paint to temporarily fill that exposed metal. If you don't....spray something to protect that metal like I did when I got a debris that hit my rocker panel and exposed the metal, oil is what I used. It kept the rust off and my mind at ease, but if all fails. Painters tape until you figure something out. The paint on most of these cars are very nice looking but can't with stand a beating. Anything, can leave a scratch, gash and dent.
The damage is falling debris while you car was parked or moving is what I can think of..
