Well, that's pretty much a rally car (or any race car for that matter), right? It's not as though the AWD 500hp monsters that the WRC pushes have ANYTHING to do with a 17k ford fiesta off the showroom floor....

And let's not get started with "Stock Car" racing, lol. Camrys? Impalas? Pfffft.

Exactly!
They reach a point where calling it an XXXX is just silly.

Depends on the level and class. You are right though many are and have to be to meet class requirements.

That car is stock stripped down with race parts. It is not re-engineered.

Yep that is certainly one qualifier I would say!
How about when 90% of the suspension and brakes are changed?
Or even the stock engine that has all upgraded internals and a turbo?
Many of these things improve the car but also change so far from it's design specs that it more resembles an 86 then is one.
Oh before anybody goes off on me I am not for one second saying the changes are bad nor am I a purist!

I would say as long as your using a stock block, haven't cut away large amounts of the frame/unibody, and haven't drastically changed the wheelbase or track it is still an 86. Although if you built a one-off car that looked like an 86 and wanted to get a vin number and register it the law (at least here in Texas) says the model listed on the title should be the car it looks like.

If I was considering that, I think I'd just find another $8000 somewhere and buy a GTR.

Is it a VIN number car?

Also, take note of the lowered redline!
What lowered redline?
