Only marginally on topic: does anyone know a good place in Sydney to get aftermarket speakers (good ones) fitted? Quality work and knowledgeable staff is more important than low prices.

I've used Focal monitors in the studio and love their neutral, balanced sound. No idea if their car audio products have that, but if they do, then a Focal dealer would be ideal.

Cheers,

100w rms per channel - Prob too much power, but it was an amp I already had.
Has just adding an amp made a noticeable Sound quality difference?
I'm looking to do the same...

Well, i guess it depends on your speaker, as Flat Black said, he had to trim, which he would mean from the plastic in the hole, which wouldn't surprise me.
Some speakers say they are a certain size, but need a bigger cutout.

I have pulled out 10in subs, that seem to float in the cutout, and put other 10in subs that needed me to make the hole bigger.

I guess what i should ask is, what do you plan on putting in there, are you replacing all the speakers? or are you just wanting to add a 4in speaker?

If you are replacing them all, are you putting in a 3 way setup just cause you can?
How much do you want to spend?

Personally, if you haven't had years of experience with 3 way setups, i wouldn't use them, for two reasons.
1: they are very hard to set up correctly
2: price.

the second one ill explain

say you have a budget of $500.
for that you would get some very good two way splits, but you would get some average three way splits all because you are splitting that money over 6 speakers instead of 4.
The cheapest 3 way splits i would buy would be Crescendo's 7B's which RRP at $799 http://www.ozbliss.com/products_cres...s_7B-3Way.html

These actually sound fantastic! but you would want a good quality amp and head unit to get the most of them.

Personally, I will be running a 2 way set up, a set of CDT splits, 6.5in midbass and 1in tweeter.
The tweeter may be replaced with a large format tweeter such as a Vifa ring radiator as i used to use, which is about 4in in diameter..

Anyway, may have gotten a bit carried away there
Hey Fudd, I know you have experience so tell me what you think:

I am running 6" JL Audio component speakers and a Focal amp. It sounds like the "middle" of the sound is missing - vocals are drowned out by instrumentals.

I guess this would make sense since they took the stock midrange out.

I have been recommended a 3" midrange from the Focal K2 range. Do you think this would solve the issue?

Depends on your budget. If I, had the money I would kit the car out.

I spent about $200 on parts/cables and did it myself. Had an amp box and sub already.

It does make a difference, the stock speakers can handle more power and they sound ok for a minor budget.

But if your going in to the trouble of paying someone to amp your stereo then it will be worth getting speaker upgrades.( you do it once and it's done ) Then if you want a sub, then that is something else to consider.

Then insulation/sound deadening. $$$ (my next project )

It's all about your budget and what YOU are going to be happy with.

I am assuming you are running a passive crossover?
and was the JL set originally a 3 way set?

i would try playing with the EQ on the headunit first if it has one, try and bump up the frequency's around 300-800hz

If you are already running JL speakers, i would stick with them rather than going the Focal, http://www.jlaudio.com/c5-400cm-car-...ossovers-99127
The tonality of the Focals may not go well with the JL's,
Also, if the JL set you have is a 2 way system, you may need to get the 3 way passive crossover to drive them.
Unless you are wanting to run a full active 3 way front stage which even i am not game to try haha.

+1 for Marty. I had an email conversation with him over a couple of days about options for my BRZ. He was very helpful and good natured. I'd take my car there if it wasn't a 1600km round trip. The web site is also a great resource. If only there was somewhere that good where I live.

Hey Fudd,

I have had a mess around with the equalizer... not much luck still sounds rubbish, lol.

The set I have is just a 2 way set.

I have spoken to JL Audio, and they don't have a midrange speaker that they sell seperately that will fit. I would have to replace the whole system which I am not too keen on.

The man at Tonkins has suggested the Focal midrange speaker with a 3 way crossover. Installed it's $850. So it's not cheap... but I don't really have much of an option.
