Rare to find them in Asian cars (I will leave the rest of that horribly stereotyping joke up to others).

I was wrong- some places (Europe mostly, or rally cars on public roads in NA) do require race cats which are as far down the line as possible to allow the system to breathe.

You were also right though since the "as possible" still means they have to be close enough to heat up. Cold cats do nothing.

Maybe the placement is for horsepower advantage, not for converter functionality. Rule could read that 'converters must be used', but not specify where..?

The catalytic converter requirement is mandatory pursuant to German Law.

Is the black portion of that front end a drop-in on a stock 86, or would you have to do the whole front end?

Although I do not like the refresh on the new 86, this TRD kit definitely ups the ante on aggressiveness and better looks. I hope new TRD goodies such as the larger brakes there will become available here in the States as well.
