Help! Brake line leakage after steel braided line install.

As said, HEL have a VERY poor record for 86 brake lines, they know exactly what the issue was and did not issue a recall when they should have. No one in Qld uses them now, well at least on track.

I'll be the oddball and say that SS lines don't really add anything to the brake system. If it does, it's so miniscule that you can't tell. Now talk about ANY other part in the brake system, and yes you will notice it. Lines....nope. I do have SS lines installed on mine. They were given to me in good faith and I wanted to show appreciation.

They tested the braided and rubber lines by pressurising them and the braided hose expanded less than 1%, and the rubber hose expanded 1.7%.

TLDR: The difference is SFA.

Sorry to re-up, I have the same issue with Goodridge lines, how did you solve?

When installing lines i found it better to spin the line itself onto the hardline. Especially if rust is a concern. The stainless lines have the advantage of a hex on the end so you can hold the hard line and tighten the flexible line. Make sure you are not attached to the caliper while you do this.

Another useful thing I found is using a crowfoot line wrench, if that is what it's called. It's a set of 3/8 crowfeet line wrench ends fit on your 3/8 ratchet. They fit much snugger and higher quality that your harbor freight double end line wrenches and don't flex.

That being said, no one needs them. Otherwise they'd come stock.

Depends on the vehicle, and the age of the OEM lines.


I could barely feel the difference between stock lines and SS lines when I put my first set on this car (it was under a year old at that point), the MC brace also made a barely noticeable difference. Less compressible pads made by far the most difference in pedal feel.


I still like the braided lines and MC brace, but if you were to put three cars in a lot and guess which mods each had, I bet most people would pick the one with stock lines and less compressible pads as the best feel vs stock pads and SS lines with MC brace.

I have SS lines and a MC brace, I couldn't tell a difference when I switched to SS lines at all, as for the MC brace I can feel a slight difference if I am hitting the brake pretty hard. Used to have a Mitsubishi with a cable clutch that ended up warping the firewall due to age.

I'm glad that I haven't messed with my brake lines. I bet the big difference I've felt in other owners' vehicles was, as @wparsons wrote, due to stiffer pads.

My car is 90% track, 10% drive to and from. From safety standpoint (car is 2015 with 37K miles, I'd say 3K track miles) was going to change the lines (no leak or such just precautionary as I build the stock calipers after 2 years, dust boots are shot). Why? In my previous car had the caliper freeze and OEM line get sweaty hence....

What is a good/realiable steel like should I look at as replacement? Have heard good things about Goodrich and there is Brembo as well.

You're probably right about the pads being the difference. I don't see the Chase Bays brake lines lasting as long as OEM either, the front brake lines where a PITA to get into the correct position without twisting. If I could do it over again I would have stayed stock and put the money towards better performing tires.

You are correct they are a pain in the ass to keep from binding up, I’m going back stock lines.
