Well, one thing I trust is that I never trust people when they talk about fuel consumption, unless they log every single tank it's almost impossible to say what is the truth, and considering everyone drive differently, you never know. I don't even trust myself, sometime I feel like I had a good tank and write down the numbers just to be disappointed.

fuelly's median for a 240SX is 23 MPG, and the FR-S is 28. That's almost 20% better fuel economy from a heavier car.

You lost .4 liter but gained almost 45 HP. Isn't that better?

I highly encourage anyone to go check the database at fuelly, and go see the corvette and SUV's that claim 30 MPG+ on the highway, and actually see what the average driver gets.

TDI drivers are terrible about it to. They claim 55mpg, but they only got that one time on a trip where they drive all freeway at 65mph with zero traffic...

Or worse, they use UK fuel economy ratings that use the imperial gallon and a completely unrealistic drive cycle.

I have a decent fill up record if anyone wants to see it. Mostly city driving.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymod...n_Rabbit.shtml

(remember to look at the 1.8L, the 1.7/1.6L was the regular Rabbit)

Pretty small sacrifice (EPA 21-30 if you forgot) for the amenities (noise dampening, decent radio that pairs up with my phone, A/C that works well, modern engine control and emissions), safety (say what you will about gubment but airbags and crumple zones will save your life when it's out of your hands), and a ~6 second 0-60 compared to ~9 seconds.

Don't get me wrong, if I come across a clean mk1 for the right price I will buy it, but your shitposting needs a dose of reality.

Edit: Found this page with mileage that seems to be what you're remembering 26 city, 37 highway:
http://www.rabbitgtipage.com/stats.html

Damn good and closer to what I would have guessed, was taken aback by my initial findings which is why I posted. Would be interesting to see what a stock one turns on the skidpad with modern rubber, arguably the only method of objectively measuring handling aside from laptimes. GTI looks like it pulls ~0.8G back in the day, FRS ~0.9G if memory serves.

It is, you went from a car that pulls 0-60 in ~8 seconds to one that does it in ~6 seconds without sacrificing mpg and gaining modern conveniences and safety, and adjusting for inflation the $15k msrp in 1993 works out to $24.5k today, what's you're gripe again?

Before you tell me about how you don't care about the 0-60 I'll respond by saying detune the car. If you're cool with a slower weaker engine if it means getting better mpg then you can do that, adjust the valve timing and you should buy back some of that precious mpg you want.

I get it, without all the modern bullshit this car would be "better" but that's not the way the world works. You're free to build a kit car to your liking, this is what the majority wants, you can't have your cake and eat it too, nobody would buy the stripped out airbagless tin can 2,400 lb Toyobaru with 180 hp (because you didn't want D4S) and wind up windows that gets taxed to high heaven because it's a gross polluter. Toyota can't make a profit off of just the three of us (you bet your ass I want that version too).

The guy is obviously a little blinded by the everything was better when I was younger human quirk.

Canada's Mile per gallons are worst, we don't even have odometers in miles and the gas pumps are in liters! Why even bother! And somehow they advertise MILES per UK gallons!

I guess it depends on who's running the scales, but we walked in and asked if they would weigh our car, and he told us just to get in line. weighed us each axle at a time, and told us our total weight via loud speaker, no charge.

I have calculated every fill up on the FRS so far, clear the trip B odo at each fill up, two clicks of the pump (same one usually) and use the gallons purchased from my recipt. I did the same thing with my 240. I didn't keep records of every one I did, but I know on trips I could get ~30mpg, and my daily commute which hasn't changed got me ~25mpg. Very similar, I think it comes down to my stop/go. I have a few long hills I have to go up from a complete stop. And If I don't want to get rear ended I have to open the throttle more than I did in my 240 to get up to speed, so I may have more hp (if I rev to 7K) but I don't have the bottom end torque I had before. ehh, not a big deal either way I still like my frs, and plan on keeping it for as long as it keeps running.. that will be the real test, to see how well this thing ages.

See fill up 37+38, 37 was one way ~75mph plus a little commuting and city driving, 38 was the reverse trip with a fillup, immediately on the highway with cruise control at 63-64mph then immediately off to the gas station. Substantial hills in between. 7 mpg difference. This car is great on gas if you choose to be conservative.

I just drove a niche over 200 miles, 80% highway and I hit 39.4 MPG. First half of the drive was around cruise down US 301 and then once I got onto I-75, I drafted behind a semi for most of the drive between Ocala to Tampa. Hitting 40 MPG is very possible if you're not in a rush.

I'd probably be running the same numbers as you if NC were as flat as FL. On the eastern side of the state (flatter), I can usually pull 2-3 mpg more than the central part (more hilly). 40 is very attainable, especially with drafting.

Doesn't the big V8 Corvette do about the same as our cars ?

To heavy not enough torque = poor gas mileage.

My 2008 LS3 vette routinely got 19 city and 29 hwy..
6 speed manual with 2 overdrive gears allows low rpm cruising..
I averaged 21 mpg.
My FRS averages 29 mpg and that's with me playing every chance I get..
So much for your theory..
