@White Shadow - I agree completely. It can be said of very few cars.

Also agree. I fell so deeply in love with this car when I saw it on the cover of Road & Track in 1993. I still to this day get goosebumps when I see one.

Anyways, its good to see Mazda is thinking about the car guys. Hopefully this will convince Honda to make a set date for something special.
You mean besides the NSX that scheduled for 2017 (I think)?

I thought it was 2015?

The problem is that if the new NSX is over 100k like it seems it will be, it will by default be mostly a garage queen and weekend high roller cruiser for the select few who feel like blowing money on a great piece of automotive art, and that's no fun for the rest of us :/

I guess you need to be a rotary engine owner to like them! The RX-7 is a sexy car but that god awful reliability of the rotaties..with the fuel consumption of a V6 and torque of a 4 cylinder and oil consumption of a 2 stroke..do not want.

2017 is a LONG ways off, but impressive specs -- 295 hp, 2750 lbs. Better p/w ratio than the current Cayman S. NA rotaries aren't known for their torque though, so 12's might be out of reach.

I would guess the price would be close to $40k.

They had shit torque because they have fixed geometry ports and huge cooling losses at low rpms.

The 16x is supposed to solve a bunch of the problems (otherwise it wouldn't be emissions legal lol), so don't be surprised to see over 320Nm, in the ballpark of normal piston engines. It's not the torque that matters though, it's the shape of the torque curve, and if they haven't done anything about the fixed geometry ports then don't expect piston engine like specific torque at the low end, since piston engines are all coming with dual cam phasing at the very minimum.

Yeah. 2015 must be right cuz that's what I almost said. There is talk of the NSX mini (with a thread here about it) that will be mid engine, awd and in the 40k range it seems. Not sure on release for that though.

Rotorheads wish! Fuel consumption is MUCH worse than with a V8, even.

I never got better than 21-22mpg on the highway in my '90 RX-7. After the rotary blew a couple of apex seals at 105k miles, I got a '95 Z28. WAY heavier, WAY more powerful, WAY quicker (less fun to drive, though!), got 26mpg hwy.

My current '94 RX-7 with ~540hp LS2 averages 27mpg hwy at 75mph. Best tank ever was 462 miles on 15.9 gallons, 29mpg!

No rotary ever gets anything like that kind of mileage.

This is good news but 2017 is so far out... So much can change by then.

As a former RX-8 owner, I'm calling this a load of BS. Firstly, this is way too far off in the future to really offer any kind of solid promise. Markets can change tremendously in that time, and the business model may no longer be viable. Secondly, the 16X has been around for a long time and Mazda has been unable to put it in a car due to fuel consumption. There's no doubt in my mind that this is still a very thirsty motor. Even if they have figured out all the reliability problems with Renesis (I had a second motor car), the rotary engine faces an enormous uphill battle from just the ever more stringent CAFE standards.

It's an enthusiasts car, first and foremost with an even smaller niche than the BRZ/FRS. I'm not sure if Mazda has the kind of money to gamble on a potential flop.

I do miss my rotary though, as I've never owned a car quite like it. I'm not sure if I'd own another, though.

Yes, you are the only one seeing this. Mazda has always been a "car guys" company......... Toyota just has the money to make it seem like they've recreated a segment when it's been there all along....
