If you just remove the pin for the shifter itself from underneath and then remove the two pins holding the shift tower to the trans, you don't have to touch the interior of the car.

I thought there had to be a way to leave the shift tower in there intact but had never explored it. That is awesome and thanks.

Well we did the clutch install today, took just under 2 hours..

Yes..under 2 hours. The joys of a lift and two very friendly mechanics (my dad and his friend.. watching 50+ year old best friends working together on a car is great)

Now to break her in nicely. Bye bye terrible chatter from the stock clutch springs.

Regarding the shifter removal, it takes like 30 minutes or less..so it was worth doing it to be sure.

Thanks everyone with the advice! Great thread here.

Just made the same mistake.

3 notes for a faster installation:
1. MAKE SURE THAT PLATE IS LINED UP
2. the interior does NOT need to even be touched. You can pull the rubber cover over the linkage and remove the pin from under the car
3. if you're careful you do not need to unplug the starter connections, just move it out of the way
4. the lower panel can be taken apart as one piece if you leave the 4 small screw bolts between the two together.

Rubber cover split

My linkage rubber cover split while pulling it over the pin. Any suggestions? I thought I was careful, but I guess not enough

Thanks I live near the gulf coast and get salt spray so I thought I would be safe and buy a new one.

BTW removing the pin from under the car works great. I think that's where I went wrong, trying to get the boot up into the interior.

Great tips. I wish I had read them earlier

I found that the plate was very loose on my car, so I put a tiny dab of superglue behind it.

I attached the cables to the starter first on reassembly. Made the job much easier.

I'm having a bitch of a time getting the trans back on. I get it on the lower two studs but can't seem to line up the trans shaft and the center of the flywheel. Any advice will be helpful. I'm close to wanting to tow the car in just to finish up

Been there.

I used a jack under the oil pan to tip the motor toward the back of the car. With the trans off the car the motor tips forward. This makes it hard to get the trans bolted back up. It took me forever. If you can get someone to help wiggle it back it will make life better.

Don't give up!

Did you align the clutch properly?

If so, just just keep wiggling it and it should just "click" into place

Yeah, I even double checked. I get the two bolts at the bottom lined up and then just can't get it to take the last 2 inches or so. I jacked up the engine and everything. I've never had this much trouble with a clutch change. I gave up. Gonna tow it into a shop tomorrow.
