Getting back to the original topic, I agree with Tcoat in that it's all about what you think is best for the car. Only rule of thumb I'd offer is "do it right, do it once", but even then you'll definitely make at least one poor choice with this car because the temptation is just too big sometimes. For example, being on a (very low) budget and not wanting to wait months to start modding I bought a cheap $350 catback and some lowering springs. They've done their jobs fine but the drone on the catback is really annoying sometimes and I know that the increased spring rate on stock struts/dampers is only putting extra unnecessary stress on the car. Eventually I'll have to replace them which means I'll have sunk costs that I could've avoided in the first place.

So there are pretty much two ways to go about modding: The fast and cheap way which will end up being more expensive than you could ever plan for as you'll be replacing and fixing things constantly, and the slow and pricey way where you buy expensive but quality parts that you'll never replace but you have to wait until you've saved enough to buy them. The main difference between them is that the first way gives temporary satisfaction but never completes the big picture, while the second way offers little to no satisfaction until you've finished your checklist, at which point you'll be so satisfied that you wouldn't have done it any other way.

The Crown Royal shift boot. I find it so annoying and I bet most people who have it do not even drink whisky.

*Chrome accessories which are now illegal.
*engine bay dress up kits

Curious as to where and why chrome accessories are "illegal"?

So, Does drinking Crown make having a shift boot made out if a bag cooler?

I still think the aftermarket following to remove your perfectly working steering wheel hub and replace with a detaching steering wheel is absolutely crazy. I get that it looks cool, I really do. There are a lot of things in life that look cool that are inappropriate for real life..

My rule of thumb is not to install anything that isn't damn-near 100% reversible and to keep all OEM parts in storage in the event the car should need to be sold or traded for any reason. Life changes fast, often times unexpectedly. People's tastes change, too.

In 2015, I was able to convert my 2013 BRZ completely back to stock and recoup about 75% of the cost of my mods (which were nearing $20,000) to trade it in for a very fair number when I found a great deal on a 911; wouldn't have been so lucky if I sold off all my stock parts and tried trading in a heavily modded car.

My '17 carries the same mantra, though I'm going much lighter on the mods this time around.

A little off topic but what made you decide to sell the 911 and buy a 2017 BRZ?

Funny how that works, huh? Go extremely hard on a build (lots of time, money and work) and the next time around it's like, "yeah, not doing that again."

I had an emergency and needed to free up some funds; unfortunately, my 911 and my RS6 were the most liquid things I had. I plan to get another 911 when the time is right, but next time I'll go with a 997.2 and get the improved power/torque, fuel mileage, suspension and brakes, lighting and infotainment. For now, the BRZ is a great track toy and a decent daily!

100% agree. I really, really screwed myself over with mods on my 335i. Went catless and sold the OEM dowpipes. Went for mods over fixing existing issues which really came back to bite me. When things started to fail, I had no money to fix. Brought down the value of the car a lot. I did buy the first car I fell in love with without properly getting it inspected and that was a tough, expensive lesson to learn.

My advice would be to not change anything on a car unless you KNOW it is 100% useful and necessary. Some things are just not worth it. Sure everyone has different priorities and that’s fine. But I’d rather pay the car off quicker and save money for bills than to buy RPF1s and a lip for a car that has never seen a track.

That's the way I'm doing it. Heavily modified FR-S initially, now a much lightly done BRZ. Really just comes down to headaches and money.
