when I dropped it off the guy said, "do you need it today?". I said, "no tomorrow is fine.". he then replied, "oh I don't think it'll take that long.". I huffed and said, "yeah I know. I looked up the DIY and it's 10x easier than my old VR4.". We went on about how my house is showing, I can't do it at home and I was so upset that I had to pay him to do it. he seemed sympathetic but I doubt it'll get me a discount.

Sometimes having something done for you that you know how to do is OK. The older you get, the more you will have done for you - get used to it. Hell, back-in-the-day, I've torn engines and drivetrains apart and put them back together many times, laying on a dirt floor of a barn, at night, by the light of a coal oil lamp, in sub freezing temperatures, with snow blowing in the cracks in the siding - oh yes, and the dirt floor sloped - both ways. But, I ain't going to do that no more. Heck, I won't even change my own oil. Do I have the tools to do it - yes, do I have the knowledge to do it, yes - do I have the ability to do it, yes - so, why don't I do it? - because I have the money to have someone else do it and - I'm fucking lazy - humfrz |

Of course, a little more discretionary/emergency funding helps that as well.

Automotive shops (dealer or independent) are businesses just like any other and giving people a discount because they are moving and can't do it themselves would be a very poor business practice. Having somebody do the work for you is such a non event that it shouldn't even remotely be something to be concerned about much less stress over.

I used to deal with that at our restaurant all the time. people would say, "oh I know Bob soooo..." expecting something for free. it never worked. he knew EVERYBODY and their mother. it's because of that we got half the traffic we did. |

If I ever get the TOB sound, do you just replace it ASAP?
How long until is creates much worse problems and leave you stranded? |

mine always made a tiny noise. I just figured it was how the car was. but when it gets really loud and it usually does out of nowhere you need to get it done asap. you might have a couple of hundred miles if you're lucky before it goes and that will be a big problem. mine was $1200. that included a new Exedy OEM replacement clutch and pressure plate, new TOB and getting the flywheel resurfaced. |

Good evening peeps. My ToB might be going out soon, so I'm looking into replacement. If I'm not mistaken, the updated P/N for the ToB is SU003-07349 (00802 is the old one).
I was also looking into the "Front cover" but can't seem to find anything on that. Wondering if SU003-03853 is the P/N we should replace, depending on its observable condition when dropping the transmission. My vehicle is approaching 120k and only been making louder noises recently, even worse than the first time the ToB got replaced under warranty (a few weeks shy of TSB). Are there other transmission bearings or related items that should be looked at? |

It would appear I have a case of these blues now as well.
Moral of the story: the TOB is not covered by the powertrain portion of the warranty. My BRZ has just under 39K (2700 miles out of the bumper to bumper). I took the car in today since it has been making annoyingly loud squeaking / squealing noises when the clutch out (at idle and at low speeds). Noise disappears if I push the clutch in (or if I even breathe on the pedal). Dealer has diagnosed the TOB as the cause. They want $2K for a new clutch, or $1600 to just fix the TOB and leave the old clutch in. This is bonkers. It's like I bought a European car or something. I plead my case. I had sat on this for over a year since the noise wasn't that bad until now and I thought it would be a powertrain warranty item. They said call Subaru and see if they'll help me out. So, I'll be on the phone with them tomorrow. |
