Had my annual review last Friday... got a 10% raise and an extra vacation day. I will get an extra vacation day each year now until I hit 10 years with the company. They will also likely be covering 100% of the cost of my course and test cost to get my PMP (Project management professional) designation. Pretty happy about all of this!

It turns out both my employer and myself forgot about my annual review last year... so this year it was worth two raises. I will be getting a cheque for retroactive pay for the last year for the 5% raise I would have received last year. Yes... I have now set a yearly recurring reminder so that I don't miss another salary review

kinda explains why everyone here is so bad at driving and why traffic has gotten so much worse in recent years.

Everyone here is not "from here". I'd guess about 98.3% of people in the metro Atlanta area are from up north. Mostly Ohio, Michigan and NY.

Ironically I just mentioned the other day that everybody in the Detroit suburbs now seem to be from the south. Did they all just swap places?

Yep, a few years back, they got tired of chopping cotton and moved to Detroit to build cars - and just never moved back -

Well they must have been disappointed when they moved there and nobody was building cars anymore!
I mean recently moved from the south not in 1922. It probably has more to do with the dirt cheap real-estate prices in some areas around there for a while. They are climbing though as neighborhoods get cleaned up in Detroit's bid for tourism dollars.

I don't know anyone that went to Detroit.

everyone I've known that was leaving or thinking of leaving and the people I heard about leaving here all went to Colorado.

Curious - what do tourists find to do/see in Detroit?

OK, the granddaughters have been fed (thanks to Jack-in-the-box), it is 80 degrees and sunny, I've uncovered the pools, ma-ma is settled in with her iced tea and i-pad under the umbrella, on lifeguard duty.

Pa-pa is off to nap land -

There is a lot now. Sports, Casinos, waterfront, concerts, festivals and a fair bit more. The Cobo Center alone brings in almost 2 million people a year. Most of what you probably think of as old Detroit waterfront is bulldozed and parkland now. Downtown is more like Vegas than Detroit. There are still neighborhoods you just don't wander into though but even some of the fully deserted ones are a form of tourist attraction all on their own. It is a revitalization success story that can be hard to believe if you haven't seen the changes in the last 10 years.
