1. I don't know how to drive stick
2. This would be my only DD
3. My current and only car I've had is an automatic 07 chevy cobalt
4. My driving would be mainly highway (Phoenix, AZ)
5. Married but not planning on a family soon

Also, I am very very much interested in LEARNING and I believe having a new, nice car like this will help my motivation to do so.

Question is, should I go for the AT FRS or am I better off looking for 'just another sedan'?
You know that by getting a FRS you will become a 'car guy.'

Just picturing you staring at the gif for an hour...

I've had my '13 for over a year now and love it.

Probably the most fun car I've ever had, and I highly recommend it

The AT vs MT question hinges on how much you drive in stop and go traffic. If hardly ever, go MT. If both ways to work every day, go AT.

With the instantly-responding paddle shifters I find my AT to be the perfect example of "involved when you want to be" motoring.

And when you don't want to drive in Camry mode anymore, throw it into manual mode and let it rip!

I only drive in traffic (live in DC metro area), and I don't mind driving stick. The clutch on the BRZ/FR-S is on the lighter side of things. It really just depends on your patience for it. I haven't driven automatic in over 10 years, so I'm pretty used to it at this point. Yes, it can be annoying, but nothing feels quite as good as the perfect rev-matched shift.

1. I don't know how to drive stick
- I didn't know how to drive stick when I bought my 2012 WRX new. I learned. You will too, if you want to.
2. This would be my only DD
- My BRZ is my only car, and DD. I have a friend with a truck for the rare occasion that I need something big. Remember, Amazon is your friend. Also, UHaul rents race-trucks and race-vans for $50/day plus gas. I've used this high-performance rental service a few times for moving or big projects.
3. My current and only car I've had is an automatic 07 chevy cobalt
- If you are interested in trying an enthusiast car, an FRS is affordable, efficient, modern, reliable, and fun.
4. My driving would be mainly highway (Phoenix, AZ)
- Sounds like a manual would be acceptable. Once you get a manual, you probably won't want anything else afterwards (injuries, old age, and traffic notwithstanding)
5. Married but not planning on a family soon
- You can always buy a 2nd car after the FRS is paid for!

Also, I am very very much interested in LEARNING and I believe having a new, nice car like this will help my motivation to do so.

Question is, should I go for the AT FRS or am I better off looking for 'just another sedan'?
If you do end up with a sedan, an Accord with a manual would be a good choice. Or a WRX with a manual. Or a Maxda 3 with a manual. Or a GTI with a manual. Or Focus ST (Ha! Only offered in a manual). You have good options if the FRS limits you in an unacceptable way.

The FRS isn't the only game in town for fun and affordable. However, it is one of two games in town (or game in towns?) if you want a new, affordable, true sports car (the other being.... miata). The FRS has driving dynamics that you can't best until you double the price.

People often buy 'big' cars to meet requirements for some hypothetical situation that rarely occurs. Buy the car that meets your actual, weekly needs, and find solutions for the few times you need a bigger car. Friends, rentals, and delivery have always picked up the slack for me when my BRZ wasn't big enough.

I have 2 cars, mazda 3 and 86.
But I drive my 86 everywhere and my mazda 3 is sitting there with dust.
I enjoy my 86, I enjoy driving stick,,I enjoy stuck in traffic,
I enjoy everything as long as I am driving this car.

If your are looking for stick don't get an auto, because you will have remorse that you didn't get what you wanted. This car with a stick is so much fun. If you are keeping the Chevy, you can learn stick on the weekends. Took me two days to learn stick when I started. Hill starts are the worse and even in auto.I avoid steep hills when I can. Sometimes ya can't and you'll have to deal with it. Spend a great deal of time hill starting. Drive both AT and stick, but don't let the ease of auto force you into auto
