I think the FR-S needs a 7th gear... 4k on the highway is too dang high - especially with smaller diameter than stock tires (205/45-17). Cruising is a balancing act of time and fuel management.

Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona have quite a few 80mph and some 85mph stretches of Interstate... if you are travelling nearly 3k miles over an extended weekend would you rather go 80mph for quite a bit of the time and spend extra hours on the road (and an extra tank of gas) while saving only a few mpg?

I often drive Houston to Northern Arizona yearly (not always in FR-S)... keep it around 3,500rpm on the open interstate, and not past 4k rpm because oil temp starts getting excessive then [231F+] (this is with no front license plate to reduce temp about 8-10F) and fuel mileage starts dropping off too much. Also run 30 weight oil (usually a blend of 5 quarts 5W-30 and with rest 10W-30), not 20 weight oil. ~3500rpm is a great engine cruise speed (in sixth)...30+mpg average and minimizing time on the road over thousands of miles while flying through the miles and oil temperature stays below 230F.

If you can navigate traffic and manage engine load properly/precisely, that is everything to getting good cruising mpg at the higher rpms... cruise control can rob you of a few mpg, but bad negotiating of traffic and terrain is what really kills it.

I agree. Whether in was in my miata or now in my FR-S, I don't know many times I've wanted to reach down under the dash for one of these.

I crossed Montana speed limit is 80mph. Plenty of people doing 90

But where I live speed limits don't got over 55 lol

I usually cruise 3-4k rpm because I have an oil cooler and rather burn more gas than run the engine cold oil. Doesn't seem a problem.

In Florida, especially in Jacksonville the limit is sort of a suggestion. Our limit is 70 but people typically do 45 in the passing lane and 80 in cruising lane. Hahaha. I run between 80-90.

This whole conversation about whether you should/shouldn't cruise at somewhere close to mid-RPM range amuses the pilot side of me.

Subaru engines are used in experimental aircraft through conversions. They make great aircraft engines because of the boxer design (most general aviation aircraft use boxer type engines). In that configuration they run at 90 to 100% of the rev limit for hours on end in flight with no issues. I've personally flown with them in both an airplane and a gyrocopter.

It would never occur to me that cruising at 4K on the highway would be an issue for the engine.

Why did this thread get to 36 pages? Wasn't this answered on the first 20 posts? LOL Drive the car how you see fit, everyone has their own opinions and their own driving style. As for me Im going to cruise at about 2-2.5k rpms (unless Im going 80 in 6th on the highway) in the highest gear possible for my speed for mpg. 93 oct from shell is getting expensive here in Jersey.

You have flown with "Subaru automotive engines" or "boxer aviation engines". Not all boxers are the same. Same with marine engines. For example a Honda V6 outboard isn't simply an Accord engine with a prop crammed on it.

It all erupted because I had the nerve to suggest people "CRUISE" in the highest gear possible.

Actually you said to cruise in the highest gear.

This came about because people were saying that cruising in too low a gear was damaging the engine. It still isn't.

Which is still debatable. Cruising in 3rd (which some were saying) on the highway can't be good for the engine compared to running 6th. Someone above was just quoting oil temps going over 235F when cruising at even 4K. I'm fairly sure I've looked at logs of me doing long stretches at 90mph around 4K and didn't see my temps go that high though.

Anyways, no need to go down this road again. People can just reread the thread if they want.
