You know, it is just an oil filter. All it does is filter the oil. Some people make a big deal out of anything.
I also used to use shitty Quaker State oil before Synthetic was invented and never had sludge or any problems at all.
Marketing is marketing. And oil is oil.

i'm not finding any recent tests that suggest that frams are drastically different anymore.

it used to be that they were built very much to budget, and the automotive world came to the conclusion that they were crap.

honestly though, fighting over oil filter brands is like fighting over the best peanut butter brand. they all work. and if any of them are so poor as to cause engine damage, the realistic scenario is that there was already a problem exacerbating engine damage before the filter was there.

^ Agreed. The general consensus is that you want more focus on changing your oil and filter at your proper intervals, depending on your driving. If we were stretching cars with the same oil/filter up to 25k miles (such as with Mobil 1 Annual Protection oil, if you wanted to take that chance), then a better filter becomes more important. As for ordinary interval oil changes, there is really not much to worry about. Get one of the OEM filters that is cheaper for you and stick to it!

Same with the oil. Whatever's on sale and is 0-20 full synthetic.

Generally agree about using whatever oil, but for us who see -20° to -30° during the winter months I see some value in oils that have better flow rate when cold.

Amsoil and penzoil platinum flow well compared to most oils in that category. There was some interesting testing done by project farm on YouTube on how oils survive in various conditions.
