Exhaust question

Hi,
Leaving opinions on sound and looks aside, does anyone see any problems with doing a 90 degree bend straight down from the stock over pipe? Obviously the stock front pipe, midpipe and muffler would be gone. I know when people have removed the muffler and didn't add an exit, they melted the rear bumper. I don't see any plastic that would melt from direct exposure but the added heat directly below the car might cause some other problem that I'm not aware of.

Thoughts?

Thank you

90dg straight down .. hmm, there wouldn't be any issues from oil/unburnt fuel getting on wheel? Most exhausts sort of like that i've seen were side exhausts ..
As for problems .. i'd check if it won't worsen scavenging of exhaust gases. I speculate from seeing most doing catless/muffler & resonator -less "racepipes" & "straight exits" that replicate length wise stock exhaust path to back, instead of letting exhaust end right away after overpipe, as you are thinking off, which should be cheaper/weight less .. so maybe for a reason? Yes, there are lot of myth in "backpressure" topics, but i'm not well versed enough in exhaust functioning theory to just get rid of all the frontpipe+catback even if insane loudness would have been acceptable by me.

Ideally you want your exhaust finishing after the doors at least to minimize/eliminate any exhaust fumes from getting in the cabin area, especially if it's catless.

This could be potentially dangerous to the occupants of the car. Exhausts exit behind the passenger compartment to prevent carbon monoxide from getting into the passenger compartment.
Even side exit exhausts are usually just in front of the rear tire to get them as far back as possible.

I would leave the cat on that is in the stock exhaust manifold. I would get a CO detector to detect any CO that is getting in the interior.

Wouldn't this be the same as a hater pipe but going down instead of up? How is performance with a hater pipe? Safety notwithstanding

You are correct.

I'm not concerned with performance.

1) It is going to make the interior of the car freaking HOT when sitting still
2) The engine compartment is going to get even hotter that normal. Invest in spare coil packs.
3) It will sound like total crap.
4) The exhaust WILL enter the cabin.

Interesting. What if I extend it to where the stock front pipe ends? Will that eliminate your first two concerns and possibly the fourth? But will that start to collect a lot of heat in the rear bumper? where the stock muffler is?

This is a really good idea if you are looking to give yourself carbon monoxide poisoning while idling.

Considered this? http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/ft86...l#.WhXSBdKnFQI

The exhaust (a gas) is a fluid, so a 90 degree bend would cause turbulent flow in the pipe right around that area. This could eventually cause carbon build up in and around the elbow if the fluid isn't flowing as it is designed to do. Eventually you could damage the exhaust pipes, or get a nasty smell inside the car, or something else that is just not good for the car.

edit: I read OPs question incorrect, but ima leave this response anyway. It doesn't apply. My bad

It would help yes but would still have potential issues and you are now heating up the tranny . You really need to route it out from under the car somehow.
I ran a short exhaust on one of my cars (not the FRS) and it was nothing but a nightmare and I regretted it right from the get go. You want to get the exhaust coming out as far back as possible and most certainly no place under the car. Believe me it is not as cool an idea as it seems in actual practice.

FT86 hater pipe, EOT.

Of course, this looks like it would heat up your engine bay and make your battery fail. But hey it looks cool.
