If you think the Miata is too different from the 86 twins to be cross-shopped, then what would you cross-shop it with? There is no other car like it, the twins really are the closest thing. The MR2 is gone, the Skystice twins are gone, every other 2-seater except the 370Z is way more expensive, and I think the Z is less Miata-like than the 86.
Let's throw V6 Mustang convertibles for the ordinary and more casual buyers as well as used Boxsters for enthusiasts in there.

I would not discount the used Boxsters as being cross shopped by enthusiasts. I know you were trying to joke, but it is true. You will also see some people cross shopping used Lotus Elises since those can readily be found for under $30K.

I looked at my local craigslist, 7x Elises and the only one under $30k was at $25k with salvage title and the claim that the front body work (clamshell) cracked with no other damage. Might be legit, idk.

Could be regional pricing differences. Here are two nearby me for example:

Yup, similar cars are $4k-$5k more expensive out here, well worth the savings to fly out and pick one up and drive it home.

It'd be worth the money, but ouch cross-country roadtrip in an Elise... I'd look forward to that like a trip to the dentist...

Agreed, and the new Mazda is a nice little toy too... but I'm still all for the 86.
0.5s is nothing to us average Joe's - we aren't racing, so who cares.

Doesn't the miata have 1" more legroom and half an inch more headroom than the brz?
