Turn Signal/Hazard Lights Issue

I've been experiencing some strange behavior from my turn signals. At first my left turn signal would stay solid. The bulb and the dash indicator were both solid. Also the right turn signal would work intermittently. After a while they all stopped working and now neither turn signals work. My hazard lights work when the car is off but they pretty much never work when the car is on. Sometimes they will work when the car is on, but only the right turn signal flashes, and it will only flash a couple times before it stops. Is this a relay issue? Thanks in advance.

sounds like a relay issue.. are you using any aftermarket head or taillights? have you tried replacing any of the bulbs?

Welcome, Kutchak , to the forum-

I'd suggest you start by looking at the last things you did while messen with the lighting system -

Check the fuses, any bulbs you messed with, look for a blown fuse, a blown bulb or a not grounded bulb.

I haven't messed with the lighting system at all. I'm not sure if the previous owner installed aftermarket headlights or just blacked out the reflectors. Either way, it's not the fuse, I just tried it. I also don't see how it would be the bulb if the hazards work when the car is off. Also when I lock or unlock, the signals flash in addition to my parking lights working.

Therefore, I haven't tried replacing any bulbs.

hmmm.... did you check ALL the fuses associated with the lighting system?

There is one in the main fuse box under the hood and several in the fuse box under the dash.

Something else to check - see if there's an aftermarket flasher relay under the dash

links to flasher relay diy here: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49437

and here:

Pull it and see if it's a programmable one that can be reset (google whatever markings are on the relay - common ones are TapTurn and SmartTap)

If you have a friend with an 86 with working turn signals see if you can swap in their relay to test.

Update

It was the relay. There was an after market relay in place by the previous owner. Switched it out and everything works as expected.
