Wow, there's a lot stuff going on in this thread. There's some good information too, once you weed through it all. In the end you should try to do what you enjoy. If not, find something tolerable and do what you enjoy as a hobby or side business.
My job isn't what I'd consider my dream job, though most of my friends are jealous. It is a decent job that allows me to do the things I like to do when I want to do them. As for college. It's a good idea to have a degree. Depending on your field, it may be a requirement. I didn't get my degree until after I already had a decent job, and one reason I took that job was because they'd pay for my degree. Certainly worked out in my favor and is what I sugeest to folks not jumping into college straight from high school. You're already in the work force so get the easy classes out of the way at your CC. Throw in some 3D art for fun. Got to keep having fun or what's the point? Get an AA for the time being if it falls into your plan. Keep working at your job(s) and look for a better one, preferably one with decent educational reimbursement benefits. As time progresses, you may find something you like better, or you may find the perfect dream job. The point is to keep moving forward. Oh yeah, and I love my car. No regrets. I had buyers remorse with my STI which is why I took the hit and sold it 3 months later.

I would calculate your earnings and money spent each week or month. Money you end up actually saving and not touching to money you use for personal uses and fees. THEN calculate money you will be saving, earnings and money wasted drinking with having the car and its insurance.
That is what I have done, I am 22 and work about 60 hours a week and go to school, not easy. When I calculated if I can live having the car and save up money for emergencies and school. Some minor cutbacks were made, and they were worth it. I actually even waited four years before making a decision of getting a car. Drove beaters till I found the time was perfect. I would also recommend if possible find a better paying job. Some way you can make extra money which you could use for the car without having to make sacrifices. Regardless, best of luck. |

I'm gonna repost on this thread again since it looks like it climbed back out of the grave - STILL no regrets. I haven't driven it in 2 days 'cause of the hurricane and my feet and hands are just itching for a spin. I almost wish I have to go to work tomorrow haha... almost

As pivotal as this car is to the automotive world right now, I would not go out and spend what hard earned money you do have. You are still young and have a good amount of work ahead of you, in my opinion, before splurging on a new car is even a pragmatic option. There are two schools of thought here. On one hand you only live once, and on the other hand your actions today should cultivate your tomorrow.
I was foolish at 21 and purchased a Subaru STI. I lost my part time job that I had while going to school and the 500 dollar payments killed me to the point of repossession. I am now (27) paying for my mistakes and rectifying my credit. I took out a private loan as a last ditch attempt to salvage the auto loan (yeah..paying a loan with a loan ). Looking back, I was foolish to get so wrapped up in a car that lead to such unnecessary financial hardship. Luckily for me though I entered a field that yielded good earning potential and am making 6 figures. Even now, I am waiting until I finish paying off the debts I've accrued during school and making sure I invest in some modest property before buying my FR-S. Besides, what good is a new car without a garage to store it in? |

I am in the same boat as you are. But I am already paying off a car but going to Community College. By the time, I transfer to my 4 year, I will have two associate(Behavioral Science(My dream was going into Politics but I started to think, I am much better than politicians.) and English literature.)
My main focus is Economics(General) and Business Admin. I currently work about 32 hours a week at a dealership. But with the car being paid off next year and I have a stable job at the moment, I am contend with the car I have now. When the car is paid off, all the extra income is going towards savings for a Euro/Japan trip(Which I need about $12,000 roughly if not a little bit more.) Then I be buying myself a new car. Education > Car in my personal thought. |
