Well no in a traditional sense, the 944 isn't even a Porsche, it's a volks assembled by Porsche to show VW how it's done (after the horrid 928, yes I hate those too) but I somehow still prefer it to the boxster(probably because of the engine tranny configuration, doesn't make me think it's trying to be a full fledged Porsche?) I really don't know but my reaction to boxster's is visceral and I doubt I'll ever get over it.
The horrid 928 eh?

The 928 was one of the best sports cars of it's day. It won the European Car of the Year award in 1978 - the only sports car to ever do so.

And the 944 was never built by VW. VW built the 924. Similar car, but not the same.

Throughout history there have been many great mid-engined Porsches. The Boxster being mid-engined does nothing to diminish it's "Porsche-ness". Boxsters have always been one of the best handling cars available for any price, and with the exception of the first model with it's 2.5 liter engine they've always been somewhat powerful.

You might want to get your facts straight before embarrassing yourself on car forums.

I always wished the Boxster/Cayman were further from the 911 in terms of size and weight instead of being right at 3000 lb. +/-, barely less than a base 911. I thought they should have been less-expensive/lighter-weight/less-powerful 4-cylinder cars from the start, possibly with a turbo option.

Unfortunately the newer ones are physically bulkier than the previous models, to me they just look too BIG now.
You realize volks made/makes the beetle right? an that as previously stated Porsche has made non 911 layout cars before.... you do know that right?

I didn't say it drove like a VW I said it felt like one, uninspired, sluggish, etc. need I really say more?

(so you've never made a mistake and confused two models of anything, not like I was alive when these cars were manufactured)... but yeah sorry youre right it was the 924 I was thinking about, that was a rolling turd (made jointly with Porsche and VW) followed by the 928 that was great... for some reason I mixed the 924/928 for the 928/944 (maybe because of the 944 and 968?)

I never said the boxster being a mr made it less of a Porsche I said I prefer the 944 over it because of the engine and tranny setup that doesn't try to replicate the 911 layout in any sense vs the 986 that kind of does try to replicate it in a sense but to me fails at doing so

but I somehow still prefer it to the boxster(probably because of the engine tranny configuration, doesn't make me think it's trying to be a full fledged Porsche?)
As in I still prefer the 944 to the boxster because of the engine tranny configuration.... Maybe you should learn to read before you embarrass yourself with your failure to understand things (see I can be a **** too) Still love you though :P

Which goes to highlight an issue with a lot of reviews these days. The GT4 box is more of a track box which trades off standing start acceleration for closer ratios further up. 2nd is tall but that means you get to use it a lot, when people first get into the gt4 they're used to using 3rd for those typical 60ish mph corners so that's what they do rather than dropping to 2nd like they should. Up a typical mountain road you change gears more in a GT4 than you do in a 86/BRZ because you are using those lower gears. Once people get used to getting further down the box than they're used to those gearing criticisms pretty much fade away

Let's be completely honest here. Porsche intentionally made the GT4's gear ratios tall so that it wouldn't outperform more 991 variants than it already does.

In fact that holds true for almost all S or above Caymans. 3rd gear in my CS is good for 115. That's just stupid. Especially considering that 6th gear is too short for highway cruising (for good fuel economy). SMH

If speed value per dollar was the only criteria everyone would drive a Corvette. Dollar per dollar its impossible to beat.

lol your mountain roads sound like the freeways around here, if I max 2nd gear in my 86 on a mountain road I'm about to fly off the mountain because I'll be braking too late.

Did I say v8? hell a lexus is300 with a few mods will keep up to a boxster and I enjoy driving it much more... silvia, bmw e36 m3, bmw 1m, s2k, That 3 wheeled car I saw on top gear once... all things I'd take over a boxster. You like the boxster that's fine, I don't I prefer other models to it, no one is wrong here (except the v8 guys rofl)

Sorry, but I'm gonna wave the BS flag again. No IS300 "with a few mods" is going to keep pace with a current Boxster on any track, straight or otherwise. Keep in mind what you're saying when you don't like the Boxster is that you don't like one of the purest handling cars money can buy. You can say you don't like the image associated with the Boxster (kind of like with the Miata). But I've never heard of an auto enthusiast that didn't like nimble gokart like handling.

$85k and while difficult, it's still possible to find them at MSRP without markup. At least according to some forum members over at www.s2ki.com

Honestly, I'm not 100% positive I believe that he's actually driven one... An IS300 will in no way be anywhere near the handling of a mid-engine Boxster... and I'm saying that as someone who loves some of the other cars he mentioned.

@WolfpackS2k Is 300, with either 2jz gte swap or stock engine with header, tune, e85, rubber and suspension will whoop a boxster on certain tracks sorry to burst your bubble.

I will though give one another spin if I come across one again(since the consensus seems to be that yes im insane for not liking it), I have driven one over 7-8 yrs ago so my thought might be different this time around... we'll see I guess.
