Yeah... 230 might be the performance bump that gets me to check one out too, all else being equal.

I don't know how the little FA20 would get to 230hp and still comply with Euro6.

I don't know - I know it's camo'd and all, but there are some different shapes to things. The opening is longer and narrower, even if it kept the lower "jaw".

If the car ends up coming with a 2.4L though the potential of the car would be greater theoretically.

Car Advice article doing the rounds too. Likely another light refresh until the proper next gen is released.

Toyota is able to achieve 40% combustion efficiency, using its Toyota New Dynamic Force technology (borrowing heavily from Mazda Sky-active technology). At the same time, it also improves torque and power output. I believe that it is well within Toyota's ability to produce 230hp from a N/A 2.0 litre engine, and comply with all emission and fuel consumption requirement.

But only if Toyota wants to do so. Tada-san will have to keep everything in balance, because higher power also requires bigger brakes, wheels, tyres, drive-shaft, radiator, suspension arms, clutch, etc. Price will go up, too. (Especially since the FT-86 has not been too profitable, costing and pricing will no doubt come under extra scrutiny this time.)

It is likely either of the two options will be followed:

(a) a small engine (eg 1.5 litre) with turbo-charging, delivering about 220hp; or
(b) Keep the same FA20 and hardly any increase in power.

If I remember correctly, there was an official version in Germany that produces about 230hp for an one-type racing. So 230hp is really not big deal for Toyota.

Fortunately, Tada-san tends to keep it easy for car owners to modify their sports cars. If the new Toybaru delivers a 'better' platform, power can be added as much as the owner pleases.

Except if it's 230 hp from a 2.4 liter engine, then you can still had the header/exhaust + a tune and still be 20-30 hp ahead of where you would with the 1st gen model.

Toyota and Subaru Officially Confirm Second Gen 86! (September 27, 2019)

Of course, there’s no replacement for displacement. Starting with a better base will obviously lead to even more potential... you just have to spend an additional $30k+ on top of your current car to see it. That is a bad deal after all these years of development and Subaru/Toyota having all these years to watch the market imo. At least it seems it’ll match the ND2 Miata though.

Does anyone know if there will be a concept or any info released at the upcoming Tokyo auto show this October 23rd?

Not sure if I should buy the current gen or buy a beater and wait.

There was a rumor that it was going to be unveiled at the show next week on SupraMKV forums but I’m not really convinced myself.

Someone on the Supra forum also said that Toyota has been showing off the new 86 to select people, which is where the rendering from a few pages back came from - the person on the forum also mentioned that the render wasn't correct.

Definitely keep your eye on the news feeds after the show starts, but don't get your hopes up.

Some kind of "Final Edition" with a few performance tweaks is far more plausible guess.
