Meh - problem hasn't come back.
The car has run like a champ in the week since then.

I'll leave this be.

Interesting.
A competently dead or dying one yes. The ecu gets it's power from the battery. When the ecu doesn't get enough juice, there's not enough power to send spark. So instead of causing a misfire (do to a weak spark) it would just shut down.

Yep, a drained battery that is not being re charged because of a bad generator/alternator or a stuck voltage regulator (back in the day) will cause a gasoline engine to shut down.

Why? Cause the spark plugs can't get any more juice to fire ......

Of course, the exception is, if the ignition is powered by a magneto. Don’t rely on that, unless you have a hand crank under the seat …….

humfrz ...... ...... finish your cup of coco and go to bed.

Haha thx guys... That's good to know. Thankfully, my car has had no problems cranking and runs fine except for those very rare instances.

Issue spawned recently on my drive home. Shut off numerous time but would turn back on w/o a problem. No CEL or other warning lights on the dash.

Found this walkthrough to clean the MAF sensor.

I had recently cleaned my drop in filter. Never thought to clean the sensor.
Drove it in this morning, car didnt sound like it was going to shut off during idle.

Perhaps you just turned it off for no reason? I mean honestly you seem to have forgotten more about this event then you remember so you never know.
