At that time though the V-10 NSX was supposedly just around the corner

This is a much better review:

If Toyota makes a back to basics new Supra (like the twins) it would be such a middle finger to cars like this new NSX.

What other cars are like the new NSX? All I can think of is the i8.

I was about to argue that it would be inline with the hyprid 'sports cars' most companies are making, but now that I think about it I actually think you're right given the reports that BMW is using the collaboration as the basis for the new Z4 which is due for a refresh and they already made their hybrid 'sports car'.

Given that BMW is selling their B48 engine at 125 hp/L, and tuners are pushing 150 hp/L out of it, I'd expect the Supra to come with a B58 pushing ~400 hp, the real test will be to see if Toyota pursues performance and keeps the weight to <3,300 lbs to make it a Corvette fighter or if they'll make the same mistake they did with the MkIV and make a mediocre grand tourer.

BMW is doing a good job with engine noise lately though, here's the B58 in the 340i:

Or I'm wrong and Toyota is basically rebadging an i8 powertrain into a chassis shared with the Z4.

Although the i8 strung out the B38 1.5L 3 cylinder to 228 hp, which is good news for the the rest of the engine family.

I can't say GTR because the Skyline GTR has always been a gadgetry black magic car since the R31 I believe.

I'm pretty sure the new LC500 is the platform to be shared with the new Supra (how it always was with the Soarer). The LC500 would have a hybrid powertrain option, but I can't see how the new Supra would use either a V8 or a hybrid. IMO it will most likely have a 3rd engine (V6 turbo maybe) and will serve as a back to basics 90's style sports car, so that it won't be just a cheaper redundant option to the LC.

I was just reading the cover story on July's Road and Track and they did a comparison between the M2, 1M, M235i, 228i, and also threw in an E30 M3 for good measure. They actually ranked the 228i the top choice out of the four modern Bimmers due to basically the same reasonings why we love driving the twins.

For a Japanese auto maker, Honda is getting really too American these days and it shows with their product offerings.

Sure it's not that exciting, but you could say that about a Porsche 911 Turbo, which has a low rev limit. That's what this is competing with. I'd take this over a McLaren 570 or 911 Turbo S.
I'd much rather have a McLaren 570S over the NSX. McLaren or Acura, not even close. High revving race bred V8 or pedestrian V6. 570S would destroy the NSX on most race tracks as well.

And the i8 is still better by almost every conceivable metric.

And since they're both mid-engine V6 hybrid supercars in the $140-160k range there's no reason for me to think they wouldn't be cross-shopped.

The whole point of an NSX was that you could basically get a supercar without spending the money. Original MSRP was still steep, but you got a lot for your money. In the $110-120 range this would have been a winner. But when you get near the $200k range, as the new one does, there's some seriously heavy hitters and nothing I've seen about this car suggests it can compete with them.
Eh what? The i8 is a supercar for environmental hypocrites with a lot of money. That's about it. And it has 3 cylinders, not 6.

My bad on the cylinders but uh, they're both hybrid supercars in the sub-$200k range. The idea that people wouldn't cross-shop them seems kind of silly.

Of course they'd cross shop them, but the extra 3 cylinders and hp makes the money difference you pointed out worth it.

@WolfpackS2k yea actually hmm it is a sort of hard decision because of the nifty V8. I dislike the 570s styling, and they removed the full active suspension and lowered the rev limit. The Acura styling I also dislike but it's more low key, which is better than flashy but not very beautiful. Hard choice, I'd probably go used McLaren 12c over either.

True enough, I just don't think that's enough to make it competitive at the price point - like if they doubled the price of a 'vette it wouldn't be competitive even though it's got more cylinders and HP. If it were priced slightly lower than the i8 it'd be way easier to justify, but it's just not as good of a car IMO.

I mean I wouldn't kick either out of bed for eating crackers but you know, since we're basically bench racing here.

Yeah that's how I see it too. At least on paper the NSX should offer far more performance.

People initially called the i8 the homeless man's 918/P1/LaFerrrari, but I think the NSX is actually a lot closer to being that.

A great review of the new NSX and I agree with all the points he made.
