Wanting to reduce the monthly fuel expense, I went off to the local Toyota store to see a 2019 Corolla Hatchback the automotive press is gaga about.

They had an XSE 6M/T car in the new Blue Flame color, the model I like. MSRP was almost $25K. The CVT model was even more. What happened? I thought the TNGA platform was supposed to reduce costs by scaling over several series of cars sharing the new platforms worldwide. At that price, Civic Si and Mazda 3 deserve consideration too.

After a walk around and short test drive, it hit me: Corolla is a nice enough car, but within a week of ownership my man card would be seriously tattered and I'd wind up needing little Blue Flame pills. I drove home in limp mode. Maybe I'll reconsider if they ever sell a hot hatch GRMN model.

So, knowing the 86 TRD SE arrives later this month, I contacted a friend at TMNA Plano about content and pricing. Here is US pricing. Add $920 for handling and processing. Private distributors SET and GST will no doubt be a little more.

Model 6251, 2019 Toyota 86 TRD SE:

Invoice $30,798, MSRP $32,420

Not bad at all and less than I've read around the 'net.

Here's a bit about content exclusive to the SE:

· 4.2" TFT Multi-Information Display (MID) with vehicle data screens, g-force friction circle with digital readout, RPM and HP/Torque curves, stop-watch, engine coolant/oil temperatures, voltmeter, fuel consumption and other vehicle data.

Dealer holdback is $1,175, allowing sales below invoice to still be marginally profitable unless they grind you to buy an extended warranty and finance through them which then makes the transaction more profitable.

All of the same port or dealer-installed TRD accessories like lowering springs, anti-sway bars, air filter and others that apply and shown on the Toyota US site will be available on the SE.

Toyota is cutting 2019 86 production 50% on the '19's so the SE will be about one-fourth of the total.

I'm seriously interested, liking the idea of ordering one with port installed springs and sways to qualify for SCCA Solo II Stock class if possible. But the hesitation is whether to buy now in the hopes of negotiating a Costco discount or wait a year for the cash back incentives and more flexible dealer pricing expected on a year-old model.

The wildcard in the decision is proposed 25% tariffs on JDM built autos, parts, and accessories that could happen soon. Toyota is sweating it. That may partly explain, along with declining demand, the 2019 production cut of the JDM built 86's. Should the 25% tariff happen, it would affect pricing and availability. The price wouldn't increase by 25%, it would spread among all series like the chicken tax, but any increase would be a deal killer. My gut says it won't happen but we're seeing some quick, almost impulsive, decisions from both sides during the ongoing trade war.

You'd think politicians at the highest level would talk things through but Japan's PM Abe is hopelessly mired in scandal and preoccupied in saving his job lately.

Anyway, thought you'd all be interested in TRD SE pricing, I didn't see it mentioned on the forum so hope this isn't a repost.

Why dont they do a model with a tape player, springs, brembos, RPF1s, sticky tires, UEL header and a TRD S/C making a small bump of power to 235-240ish. I would trade my 2013 in for that.

Or Ferrari, Porsche, McClaren, Audi and all the rest jumping on the "it" color of the year, blue.

I'm only considering an 86 TRD SE now after the emasculating test drive of the '19 Corolla Hatchback.

Raven only. They're referring to the new Blue Flame Corolla color.

I'd thank you but can't find a button. Might have to qualify somehow first.

Good to see a dealer promoting the car before it arrives, too.

Here's the best I could come up with.

Unfortunately, it appears TRD SE won't get leather heated seats, only cloth. It seems like the outside cloth bolsters could become a wear item.

86 TRD SE Exterior:

- LED fog lights
- Underbody aerodynamic panel
- Color-keyed, heated exterior mirrors
- 18” split spoke alloy wheels
- TRD front, rear, and side under spoilers with color-keyed rear spoiler
- TRD tricolor side body graphic
- TRD performance exhaust
- Brembo brakes and SACHS performance dampers

86 TRD SE Interior:

- Red and black fabric sport front bucket seat with side bolsters
- Leather covered parking brake cover with red contrast stitching
- Leather gear shift boot with red contrast stitching
- Granlux suede-like material covering the top of the instrument cluster hood, red contrast stitching throughout the interior, and stitched "TRD” logo on passenger side IP facia
- Red seatbelts

86 TRD SE Function:

- 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission only
- Smart key with push button start
- Anti-theft alarm, engine immobilizer
- Dual zone automatic control A/C
- Red and black leather-trimmed steering wheel with red contrast stitching, Audio, and MID controls
- 4.2" TFT Multi-Information Display (MID) with vehicle data screens, g-force friction circle with digital readout, RPM and HP/Torque curves, stop-watch, engine coolant/oil temperatures, voltmeter, fuel consumption and other vehicle data

Except they "forgot" to add mandatory $920 for handling and processing.

With that omission, be leery of things like dealer doc fees and unnecessary fluff.
