Funny Road & Track Article on the FRS/BRZ

http://www.roadandtrack.com/voices/c...told-by-idiots

Kinda hilarious to read. My experience with my FRS was a lot better though he didn't know everything I asked like what fuel it took.

How was your experience?

A little OT but along the same line as the Baruth story....

At the Toronto show the other week I asked a BMW salesman if the M Performance LSD for the M235i was a port or dealer installed option.... When he looked confused I asked him if he knew what a differential was - he didn't have a clue.

I had a similar experience at Subaru Laval, where the salesman didn't bother giving me a test drive - saying they were waiting to get demos and that I should come back in two months.

He then proceeded to give me MRSP when I asked if we could discuss pricing regardless. I also told him I was looking into the BRZ and FR-S. He said "They are similar cars, but the FR-S isn't turbo". The whole time, I felt like he just wanted the conversation to be over, nearly pushing me out the door.

I left disappointed ..

That article is spot on... I went straight in and bought one already knowing what I am getting myself into.

I've never read an article as true as this one. Salesman talked for a solid 5 minutes on their award win Symmetrical AWD before i had to bust his bubble... Where do they get these guys...

Never gave them the chance to screw up the sale. Went in, told them what I wanted and that I would be driving it by X date from someone. The next day they called and had located what I wanted. Drove over there an hour later and handed them a $5K deposit in cash so they would get the car to their lot. From there, it was just like buying any other car. The salesman was no BS...He said that I likely knew a lot more about the car than he did but if I had questions, he would get the answers for me. I declined and drove off in my new toy.

But really, since when are we supposed to trust what salesman is saying anyway?
I only consider salesman as the person to negotiate the price with - because I know most of them will tell you what you wanna hear just to sell the car.

Our salesman tried to demonstrate the Bespoke and didn't know much about it at all. It was funny. Also he said to use regular gas. We bought a base model but when we asked about the Monogram Series, he said "Exactly the same except for leather seats" They should know about the products they are selling! But he did get us a really good discount and trade in value on our old car the first time, that we didn't have to negotiate with at all.

In the USA, salesman do not even negotiate price. They are lackey's between the sales manager and customer when negotiating price. Their primary function is to babysit the test drive and process paperwork.

Exactly. When I go to look at a car, I already know most/all of the facts, I just need a test-drive to see what the car is like on the road.

My experience buying a car from Scion was good. My salesperson admittedly didn't know much about the car, but that was fine with me. The less BS, the better. When it came time for the test-drive, he handed me the keys and let me drive on my own. Simple. I bought the car from him and told him I appreciated his honesty during the sales process.

The general premise is true. While my sales guy was knowledgeable and good to deal with, I did know more than he did about it. He seemed to know that though.

But I'm not sure that fact is limited to this car. The last 3 cars I've bought going back to 1999 I knew more than the folks at the dealer did before I ever walked in. Sales people need to recognize that people do research online and they need to change their tactics to match.

I find it odd though that the author compares it to an Accord. Maybe he was being a bit tongue-in-cheek there, but an Accord? B-O-R-I-N-G! I really don't care if all sorts of family sedans can out drag race this car. They aren't interesting, don't get my pulse going on looks alone, and aren't as much fun.

Salesmen not knowing their ass from their elbow and exaggerating claims is nothing new.

I giggled a number of years back when looking at a gti, the salesman was making all kinds of performance claims about how fast it was. I pointed outside to the gto I drove there, he stopped talking.

Funnily, I just received a voice message yesterday from the dealership that sold me the car last September. It said that Toyota "just released the TRD exhaust and cold air filter and are still working on the turbo". Really now? Just released those things? I almost hope TRD released new exhaust, etc. Ha
