I guess I missed the portion on daylight aerial surveillance, and I do agree on the pilot being complicit in the event, just as guilty as the driver.

You guys act like a felony had been committed. If someone died that might be true, but at the end of the day a misdemeanor reckless driving is all it is.

I just spent some time looking for that long form video but it might have been taken down for good reason.

There was shocking aerial footage tracking the car overtaking cars and semis with at least a 60-80 mph speed differential...in the right side breakdown lane.

That's pretty insane.

Fleeing law enforcement, as they did "successfully" in the long form video, is a felony in many states.

But you're right, no known injuries to innocents were reported so in my state >100 mph over would've "only" been up to a year in jail, up to $6,250 in fines and a 90-day license suspension.

I wasn't aware they ran from the cops. That's only a misdemeanor in CT unless it involves a crime. Used to be only an infraction about 15 years ago! I can easily see that being a felony though in many states. I mean speeding by itself is like a misdemeanor in Virgina.

Technically, it's multiple misdemeanors in each jurisdiction they passed through, so the fines alone would be huge.

As far as someone being killed, well, lets hope it doesn't come to that, but as people push it faster and faster, it will happen. Almost 200 MPH on a public road is a blatant disregard for life regardless of the precautions you take or how "experienced" you are.

It's pretty similar in most states at least per R&T here. Also, as I mentioned above, they could technically be convicted in each jurisdiction they went through, so it would add up pretty quickly.

In the end, nothing will be done, and eventually someone will try to break the record meaning even higher speeds.

There is nothing left to decrease the time except driving faster. I suppose you could cut 22m off if you did the same run and didn't have to refuel, but that's about it.

I'd be perfectly happy with it if it were some type of sanctioned event, which could be done, although it would be expensive and require a LOT of coordination, but it could be done. Doing it on a public road endangering others, regardless of precautions you take, just because you think you are better than everyone else and the rules don't apply to you is unacceptable.

Knowing Arne & Doug, that's not what they did, and outside of their character. They had spotters on the ground just like we did in 2013 (though we had significantly less).

You might be thinking of Alex & Dave's run in 2006 / 2007. A spotter plane was used in that attempt + film crew.

Thanks for the clarification, I wouldn't want to accuse anyone of undeserved felonies. You're likely right, but from memory the cars looked similar.

13:25 What does "pretending the car was acting up" mean? Police believed that their Ferrari is acting up and release them? What?
Does some cars tend to speed up to 130 miles by themselves and driver cannot do anything about it? And this is normal for a Ferrari?

@dhuang, I'd be curious to know how you made the decision that this was OK to do (promise, no judgement and no argument).

Also, not sure how having air cover is any better or worse than having ground spotters. If anything I think it would be a safer and better alternative providing a larger field of vision for the spotter.

It's a long story, but if you come out to Caffeine & Octane and we happen to cross paths, I'll tell you more.

The abridged version would be being young, dumb, and not having enough time to fully grasp how daunting the task would be.

At night, it is terrible for airplanes. Spotters on the ground also can help gauge pace of traffic and current road conditions. Unmarked vehicles are also easier to spot from the road. Plethora of other reasons, but these are the ones that come to my mind first.

Way to not actually watch the video lol. They just broke it in the last week or so, if you watch the video a month ago you definitely didn't see from their run...

Big Vinwiki fan! Congratulations to Doug and Arnie!
