At least it's offered

Imagine spending $45k on a hot hatch and getting 300 hp mated to an open diff.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a2...orks-gp-price/

Hyundai and Honda are the only ones actually trying to win over enthusiasts. VW and Ford just tarted up their economy cars and Subaru hasn't touched the STI powertrain in a decade, it's not even a competition these days.

To be fair to Subaru, I'm not all convinced they are even capable of major overhauls to that power train due to internal politics. I'm mean, look at what happened when they built the BRZ/86, all of a sudden the FA started getting thrown into other vehicles.

If internal politics is halting development of their products, there's no "being fair" that company is going to die.

I mean, if the next STi isn't an improvement in anyway over the last, I'd say they are already dead. At least in the eyes of the enthusiasts.

Just wait until the unimproved BRZ mk2

But with literally nobody else making a decent AWD rally inspired car or a lightweight affordable RWD coupe these days, they don't have to try, they have market segments with literally zero competition.

The mk7 GTI is actually a great enthusiast's car. Can be purchased with a slick 6-spd manual and recently, VW changed the LSD from an option pack to standard equipment on all trims. (Essentially an electro-hydraulic clutch on the front diff to allow torque-vectoring between the front wheels.) Not to mention a stage 1 tune bumps the car to 290 whp and 340 wtq.

It might not be as raw or unfiltered as a CTR or VN, but the mk7 GTI is certainly great in its own right, especially if you can't stomach the looks of the CTR or the interior of the VN.

The STI is now only a nice family car riding on the coat tails of past glory.

https://www.wrc.com/en/

My 2015 STI was uninspiring.

I actually concidered it a poor purchase, maybe if you need an AWD vehicle to get around due to geographical or environmental reasons, but for performance and fun as a daily driver, it was sorely lacking.

My 86 is twice the fun as the STI ever was, even after tuning the STI.

And now with only a little boost, the 86 outperforms the STI everywhere but in the wet.

Meh, bored rant

I would save some extra dollars and/or go into more debt to own the CTR then

I havenít driven a Veloster N so I shouldnít be too harsh on it. And itís very cool Hyundai even makes a car like that.

Look at the reviews. I think you would rethink that statement based on performance. Looks are something either ppl love or hate

The 9th gen Civic wasnít the best Honda ever made, and I think that just coincided with Hyundai getting ďbetterĒ. The 9th gen Civic still handles and drives better than any Elantra, Iím sorry.

This was a bad one, agreed. The worst part was Hondaís reluctance to accept the blame.

Honda has highs as good as the best of them, S2k's are retaining value better than Boxsters or Z3's after 20 years, ITR's are silly money, but their lows are just like anybody else.

And thatís why I would always choose the comparable Honda over a Hyundai. For me personally Honda is cemented in my psyche for making reliable and fun to drive cars. the NSX, S2000, Integra Type R/GSR, 3rd and 4th gen Prelude, pretty much all Accords and Civics

Thatís not even getting into Hondaís racing history, their motorcycles, or Acura products.
Hyundai ainít got any of that. And their Genesis brand is kind of a joke. Iím not saying Hyundai canít make good cars, but comparing the two companies is silly.

50 years ago Honda was a company that made shitbox scooters. Gotta start somewhere and Hyundai is finally taking steps in the right direction, I'd absolutely test drive a VN vs a CTR.

Youíre right, keeping an open mind is always a good thing. Reviews are very positive, and if I was shopping for a hot hatch the Veloster N would be on the list. I feel like Iím spoiled by my FR-S now. Even though the N will feel faster, itís hard to replace a lightweight, RWD, tight 6 speed, sublime handling, no frills sports car. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but a Porsche Cayman S is the only car that seems better. I recently test drove one with my brother, and oh yeah, it would satisfy all of those wants in a sports car.
