Now that winter is basically over up here in Canadaland, I thought I'd throw in my opinion about Mogul Gear 300. I've run it for the last 10,000 km, about 1/2 of that was probably through our winter. I was afraid of the 2nd gear, but it wasn't all that bad. Warmup consisted of idling while I cleared the windows.

I'd pull away in 1st slowly, and shift around 3-3.5k RPM in one quick fluid motion. Never had a problem getting second. Downshifting into second while coasting was downright impossible. The only way to get 2nd while moving and before the temperature gauge showed about 1/8th, was to shift to neutral release the clutch, blip the throttle, and immediately pull into second as the clutch was depressed. (Double clutching).

My main tactic was too just drive knowing the above and avoiding the situation where I'd need second again after going into 3rd.

straight from MOTUL's technical data sheets for GEAR 300:
"Suitable for any type of seal and yellow material used in gearboxes design"
https://www.motul.com/system/product...pdf?1303320907

MOTYLGEAR:
"Suitable for any type of seal and yellow material used in gearboxes design"
https://www.motul.com/system/product...pdf?1290086772

I figured I would look into what MOTUL suggests for our cars and they say the MT should use either GEAR 300 or MOTYLGEAR. I'm going to be trying the MOTYLGEAR ... because they market it for hard to shift and/or noisy gearboxes lol

Thanks for clarifying that. I was going to find those documents to point that out. Along with that we've used the Motul Gear 300 in probably 50 or so BRZ/FRSes so far without issue.

The MotylGear just as an FYI is not a synthetic fluid, it's a semi-synthetic.

Just put some Redline MTL(figured it would be better over Motul 300[from what I hear and the fact that it is thicker] if I decide to DD it in the ohio winter) in my trans today(3200mi). Feels ALOOOOOT better. Not perfect, I don't think. I have had that notchy 2nd gear experiences and times where my trans literally would not let me downshift to 3rd->2nd going anywhere from 15~30mph. It was like shifting into a wall, no movement... just. wall.

I will have to see how it does after a cold start, that is where I had most of my problems. But I noticed shifting was much much smoother.

I will need to change diff sometime in the summer

Previous cars where I'd used Motul 300 don't have yellow metals in the trans upon further research so the GL4/5 worked great. For the 86, it was worth it to stick with a GL4, if only for the peace of mind as I want the car to either A die a viking death on the track or B last a good long time, don't want to have a nagging concern about destroying a tranny down the road.

This ^^

Ive been doing a ton a research and this is what i came down to as well. for DD w/ no track, this is also what EVS recommends. if you are tracking then switching the amsoil to MOTUL is the recommended fluids, By EVS at least.

I got caught in the snowstorm that hit Sedona this January with my BRZ, and I had NO trouble with shifting in the cold weather. Only problem was not foreseeing the storm and getting some temporary snow/ice tires and wheels, but ZERO shifting problems.

I have motul gear 300 in the MT.

Motul 300 75W-90, or Motocraft XT-M5-QS GL-4

My 2nd post but I've been researching quite a bit before I bought the 86.

On mine, Motul went in a few hundred miles ago (12,200 miles). This is what I think: It is NOT worse than oem fluid, and yes it does take some warm up as with any other fluid. If you rev match you should have no problem with any GL-4,5.

I've driven cars all my life with synchros that were shot. If you keep the rpm's up, not falling too much before you shift, then gears fall into place easily. Won't go into advanced detail on heel-to-toe, but thats basically what it comes down to.

If you wait too long and the rpm's drop a lot before you shift then you'll have problems. Old oe fluid (1st 12k miles) and rev matching = good. New motul and not rev matching = just as bad as oe fluid and not rev matching.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but Motocraft XT-M5-QS GL-4 for aisin transmissions would also work. I was about to go with motocraft but since I ordered online, I figured I might as well go with Motul 1000118 75w-90 Gear 300.

Been running Redline MT90 for the past year+, ~10k miles and 400+ autocross runs, and it's always felt great.

Since Redline MT90 is a 75w-90 gear oil, does it would feel any differently than OEM?

+1 for Redline MT90. Fixed a minor 3-4 gear change grind in mine. Been in about one year now and is easy to shift in all temps.
