Just got a call from the local Toyota stealership, they said I have to pay a $380 diagnostics fee to see if my extended warranty will cover repairs. This is BS i pay for extended warranty and have to shell out money. I kept my cool and told them i was not happy about their policy but they said if Toyota decide to cover the repairs, they waive the diagnostics fee. Its going to be Monday before i hear anything, will update when I hear something, keeping my fingers crossed.

That is pretty standard everywhere even with warranty work. It costs them money to do the inspection and if they did just a few a day with no income they would soon be out of business. Like they said you don't pay if it is indeed warranty. Remember it isn't the dealer that pays for warranty jobs it is Toyota or a third party in the case of some extended warranties. They are businesses with bills to pay and people to keep employed.

Isn't there a standard rate for their inspections? I paid $145 when they were "diagnosing" my TOB issue, even though I walked in telling them exactly what was wrong. I figured that was their standard rate for inspections. Maybe they charge more if they're pulling apart the engine as opposed to the transmission?

Maybe worth mentioning that someone with the same car paid $145 for a dealer diagnostic fee. ~$400 seems a bit steep just to tell you what's wrong with the car.

The rate varies depending on how complex the inspection is.

Dealership just informed me my FRS engine failure was due to an internal problem that threw the timing off and burned up my valves and lifters. Estimated repair is over $11k, Toyota head engineer is coming out to inspect the car to see if my Toyota extended warranty will be honored. I ask my service agent if the problem was due to a spun bearing, he said no. I just hope they do the right thing and honor my extended warranty, I will know the decision in a few days.

Dealership just informed me that Toyota will be honoring my extended warranty. The ECU had stored 3 to 4 codes showing the VVT Variable Valve Timing threw the timing off to cause damage to my valves. Its over 11k to repair thank God Toyota did the right thing. I thinking about trading in for a Porsche 718s Cayman.

I just got my FRS back, total bill was $11,602. The CEL code was 895011, They told me no. 3 rod went bad so they had to rebuild my engine instead of replacing it with a new engine which costs $6500. They replaced the short block, ECU, VVT, values, lifters and both cylinder heads. The cause of my engine failing was due to the VVT gears stuck causing timing to over advance. Fortunately I had a 7 year Toyota extended warranty to cover all work.

They rebuilt your motor by replacing the short block and both cylinder heads? That is a new engine, they just got to charge the warranty for all the labor to assemble it.

Your image doesn't work.

The problem was determined to be due to loss of oil pressure causing no.3 rod bearing to turn and fall apart. The metal from the rod bearing mixed in with the oil and was carried out thru the engine .
