Modding your car and the law

I'm relatively new here. I live in california and the law is pretty stringent here. When it comes to modding your car i'm curious to see what some of your take is in getting it past inspection or through smog check.

I plan on Modifying it during the 5 or 6 years till smog check is needed, then once i need a smog check. Replace all the parts that aren't CARB legal and be on my way, dont let a smog check keep you from modifying your car you own it; just drive smart and watch out for cops haha

I'm only going to reply to your title...

I don't think you can mod the law.

Buy OEM!!

when i had my DC2 i had a huge HKS ti Exhaust for like 3 years then one day a pig decided to pull me over and slap me with a 500$ ticket.. had to smog it and go see a judge in court pled guilty.... also had to smog it to a place they wanted so i cant pull a dirty move and have it smog from someone i know or gave money to make it pass..

passed by other cops and nothing.. but this cop decided to pull me over one day and told me its too big.. was not even loud then a fart can civic passes by and he did nothing... i can tell the civic driver was trying to keep his fart can from farting loud..

my car was all black trying to blend in but one day this pig decided to pull me over right in front of rallys fast food restaurant even told me to pull over right in front so he can show off doing his job and my neighbor driving by saw me..

thats california for you they crush cars if you get caught street racing and will pick on you for having bling bling rice looking cars..

keep your mods street legal and youll be ok unless its a full on track car

socal sucks but just be a cool guy and leave the drivetrain alone. its been shown that you can be disgustingly fast with just some awesome suspension, wheels/tires, and brakes.

agree... i never street raced.. knew a guy in high school that did that and he ened up getting crushed.... crushed as in he hit a huge tree with a camero and the steering wheel went into his chest and my friends saw that mess because it happen in front of their house.. one wheel flew into a garage door like 4 house down..

no point in racing in the street its not worth anything.. he learned his lesson with his life

Yeah a lot of socal is is way more harsh than norcal. They are not likely to give u shit for an air intake. But it does happen. If you leave the cats on and it is not super loud most cat back mufflers should be fine. But wit me I just run anything I want and swap back for smog check. I am fine with risking tickets. I got a ticket for a noisy muffler 8 years ago. Had to put my stock muffler on and go to a ref with a disable meter. Back then they would drop the ticket once you pass. But any more u still pay a minimum fee. My girl is from so cal. She says having your car slammed to the ground or a big wing will get u pulled over sometimes.
I will drive fast everywhere I go. But ill never street race. I have seen a couple of crashes wit people just trying to show off near me. I can't even imagine how stuped or the carnage that would result from someone street racing.

Just get in with someone at a local inspection/emissions station. I work right next to one of these, went over and talked to the head mechanic. He told me he'd pass me no matter what I have done. The mechanics can always say "He/She didn't have that installed when they came in for their annual inspection."

Seriously if you like modding cars that much, what's really keeping you from moving out of Cali..? Other than family, the nice weather, earthquakes, and higher-than-average cost of living..
