Yes, complaining about customers is a time-honored tradition in the service industry. That doesn't make it ethical or correct. To claim that "his only offense was sitting on his phone" is a laughable proposition.

The salesman has nobody to blame but himself.

OP did the right thing by bringing it to the attention of the salesman's superior. At the very least, he is well within his rights to ensure that particular salesman is not getting a single dime of his money.
Irony overload.

Don't make this personal. The sales idiot has granted you a "checkmate" position, now move in for the kill and drive off in your shiny new red car.

Dead serious Suave...

Fr-s= RELATIVELY slow and fun to drive a.k.a go kart....

I understand the S is for sport, but honestly whenever I get an asshole asking about my car I tend to describe it like a souped-up go kart so when they tell me how much more horse power their (insert car here) has I can remind them of the fun driving experience.
@dori.
Then start.

How does asking about a car make someone an asshole?

I think he means when the ass "asks" about the car that person already knows about it and wants to take that oppertunity to make fun of the lack of horse power in the frs/brz and gloat about his 500HP Mustang. Anytime I post on my facebook about my BRZ I have a select few car friends that always point out it's "shortcomings".

Then post a Willy Wonka meme being condescending about having alot of power. Something like "You have a lot of horsepower, so tell me how special this makes you."

Something stinks about this.

The guy insulted you with mildly obnoxious comments. You have every right to complain. But to use the incident to get a better deal really dilutes the moral impact of your claim. After all, the only injury you took was to your dignity. In a fair scenario you would get an apology from the salesman and the general manager.

However, once you start to negotiate a better price out of the incident you are monetizing your moral objections.

So what is your price?
They call you a jerk and it is worth $500?
Ass***e gets you $1,000 off?
Sh*thead gets you $1,500 off?

If you had any real dignity you would accept the apology, and/or walk away from the dealership.

To try to use it for personal advantage puts you on the same level as the salesman.

If they are giving you a deal it might be a option however i would take their deal to another dealer and see if they will beat it or match it.
However, if you feel spiteful, i know i would. I would go into the same dealer and go for it except tell the manager you wont work with that salesmen and show him the voice mail, that might even get you a im so sorry that happened here is a better deal from the manager and the salesmen will get a talking to, which he deserves, that not a mistake, that is just a **** move on his part

Are you willing to do business with someone that doesn't respect you?

An apology means nothing. People are just sorry they get caught.

If the dealership wants OP's business, they have to earn that back with the only thing that's 100% sincere in business.

I'm pretty sure that nobody at any business I randomly go to respects me because they don't know me. What he did was nothing more than every single person does regularly all the time. Yeah he got caught, it doesn't change the fact that he's just a regular guy doing a regular job and not loving it. Everybody vents, this thread is WAY over-dramatic over this. I don't even know you and I know that you've done this too to a customer, stranger, anyone. Guaranteed.

What he did was dumb. The cell phone part not the expressing his opinion part. He's entitled to that just like everyone else. Real rudeness would have been if he'd said it to his face. I just farted and wished you'd smelled it. Was that rude? No because you aren't here for me to put my butt in your face. Context is everything. He never meant for the OP to hear it so it wasn't actually him being a ****. It was him being a normal opinionated human being.
